Next Wednesday we welcome Steve Smith FRPS MPAGB who will be presenting his talk titled The Street Witness. This is based on life on the streets of Britain and Cuba exploring and capturing those precious moments that are gone in a moment. Work is shot on digital and on film including two fellowship panels and will include some of his latest work.

Move Along Please Sir!
by Steve Smith |
Your handbook shows Vanessa & Adrian Herring are due to speak on 21 February, you will probably remember that they in fact gave their talk back in January. The speaker on 21 February will, in fact, be our own John Chamberlin FRPS MFIAP with his talk From Dawn to Dusk. |
Next Monday, 12 February, is the monthly meeting of the Digital Imaging Group. As usual all members are welcome, even more so if you bring along pictures, either for general discussion or just to show off what you've been up to lately. Pictures can be either prints or projected images (these should be saved as jpegs on a USB memory stick).
An added incentive is the fact that Ashwin will no doubt be bringing along his usual selection of chocolate biscuits. |

As mentioned in last week's issue, the first phase of this year's Salon is now complete - we've amassed 10,000+ images to judge. The next phase is the judging, this takes place over the weekend of Friday 16 to Sunday 18 February. We will be looking for members to help with this, mainly on "keyboard duty" to keep an eye on the projection as the images go through. So if you think that you can help, we'll be more than pleased to welcome you along on all or any of those days. If you're really keen, you are welcome to come along to the clubrooms on Monday (12 Feb) when we will be having a dry run to make sure everything works - Please let me know if you can help, either by email chairman@bristolsalon.co.uk or phone: 07706 868638
Looking forward to seeing you, either on Monday or over the judging weekend.
If you don't feel you want to commit yourself to helping, you are more than welcome to come along over the weekend just to see what goes on, and who knows, you might even get a cup of coffee!

The WCPF Interclub Digital Projected Image Competition (DPIC) is being held at Exeter on 18 February. Tickets are now on sale and can be found on-line by following this link. This event is usually very poorly supported by BPS members, with the majority of those who go being from the Salon Committee. Unfortunately, DPIC and the Salon judging coincide this year, so we won't be able to go, it would be really great if other members could support BPS and go to Exeter on the 18th. |

WCPF Members' Exhibition - Entry Now Open
|
We have received the following from WCPF:
The 2018 WCPF Members Exhibition (MX) is currently being finalised and the entry system will be available from mid-January. Previous entrants will receive an ‘invitation to enter’ email, and a link to the entry system will be available from this page once it is available.
Timings
Entry details are available here. Entry will close as usual on the date of the Council Meeting ie 3rd March 2018.
Terms and Conditions
The entry classes remain as last year with 3 print classes (Open, Mono, Nature) and 4 PDI classes (Open, Nature, Creative, Photo Travel). The class definitions will be available on the entry website, and are the same as last year and are those adopted by the PAGB. Image size for PDI’s has been increased to the PAGB standard of 1600x1200 (previously 1400x1050).
Awards
The exhibition once again has PAGB Patronage and PAGB Gold, Silver and Bronze medals plus Selectors Ribbons will be awarded in each class. A number of highly commended certificates (at the selectors discretion) will also be awarded in each class.
The ‘Margaret Aven’ trophy for the entrant who gains the most acceptances across all 7 classes, and ‘Best Wildlife’ trophy in both Nature classes will also be awarded again this year.
Favourite Image and Sale Of Prints
We are repeating these initiatives that we introduced last year. Entrants will have 3 choices available
1. They may opt in to the favourite print image lottery where one of the visitors that voted will receive a free copy of the print that they voted for.
2. They may opt in to the visitors favourite print image lottery and the sale of prints. Prints will be offered for sale at a standard price of £35. Any postage fees required would be an extra cost.
3. They may opt out of both initiatives:
Venue
We are returning to Bovey Tracy Golf Club with the excellent facilities that proved so sucessful last year.
Selectors
Christine Widdall MPAGB EFIAP FBPE
Paul Keene FRPS MPAGB EFIAP/d2 MFIAP
Leo Rich ARPS DPAGB APAGB EFIAP/g
We hope that members of WCPF clubs will continue to support the exhibition and submit their entries in good time. Clubs may want to collect all of the print entries from their members and make a single delivery to the appointed AES. This should make the process more efficient and effective for club members and the AES.
The name & contact details for an entrants AES will be notified on completion of the online entry.
If anything is unclear or there are any questions then please get in touch with the Exhibition Secretary by email at mpix@wcpf.org.uk
Ralph Snook & Sandie Cox
WCPF Exhibition Secretaries
Danny Heaton will be able to take your prints to the WCPF Council meeting on 3 March, so if you are interested, please keep a weather eye open on the WCPF website for the actual opening date - www.wcpf.org.uk

Painswick Rococco Gardens - Famous for their Snowdrop displays, they are delighted to confirm that the snowdrops are now looking at their very best, after weeks of anticipation. The main Snowdrop Grove is in full flower, with their own famous "Galanthus Atkinsii" attracting particular comment at the moment. Depending on the weather, the snowdrop display is likely to be looking good until the end of February. If you're planning a visit later in the month, do check back or keep an eye on our social media feeds for updates. The cold and dry weather is good, as this slows down the snowdrops' growth and means a longer display! Full details here.

At Kingswood Photographic Society - Chris Palmer FRPS, DPAGB, APAGB, EFIAP, who will be giving his latest print talk entitled Beyond the Summit.
Chris says: “A Fellowship of the RPS represents, for many, the photographer’s Everest, something to aspire to and I am thrilled to have got there! It remained my one sole aim for many years, so when I finally gained the distinction it provoked a thought as to what to do now?
In this lecture I discuss the new challenges I have set myself, the decisions I have made and the photographic directions I am taking in my current work. Primarily I remain a location photographer, mostly of landscapes, seascapes and detail, but also capturing images in towns and cities too. Increasingly I have become more interested in projects and themes, sets of images that perhaps say more than a single isolated shot. My aim is to produce distinctive and worthy work that reflects the way I see the world. Rarely are my pictures judged these days, except by me!
Kingswood PS meet Fridays from 7.30pm to around 9.30pm at St Barnabas Church Hall, Warmley, Bristol BS30 5JJ. Visitors are most welcome and the cost for this evening is £3.00. |

Swaps: Photographs from the David Hurn Collection. Until 15 April at the National Museum, Cardiff. This exhibition celebrates the major gift of photographs from David Hurn’s private collection and marks the opening of Amgueddfa Cymru’s first gallery dedicated to photography. Throughout his career as a documentary photographer and member of Magnum Photos, Hurn has been an avid collector of photography. Remarkably, he has amassed his private collection by swapping works with other photographers. The collection comprises approximately 700 photographs by leading 20th and 21st century photographers such as Henri Cartier-Bresson, Eve Arnold, Sergio Larrain, Bill Brandt, Martine Franck, Bruce Davidson and Martin Parr, through to emerging photographers such as Bieke Depoorter, Clementine Schneidermann, and Newsha Tavakolian. The exhibition presents a selection of works that reflect on Hurn’s own career and influences, his eye for a good photograph and the friendships he has developed with photographers along the way. ITS NOT PARTICULARLY EASY FINDING "DATES FOR YOUR DIARY", SO I WOULD REALLY APPRECIATE IT IF MEMBERS COULD LET ME KNOW OF ANY EVENTS, EXHIBITIONS OR PICTURE LOCATIONS THAT THEY THINK WOULD BE OF INTEREST. DATES AND WEB LINKS WOULD HELP
|
Well done to Val Duncan on gaining her GMPSA. This is no mean feat as she has had to have had 3,000 acceptances in PSA recognised international exhibitions, I struggle to find 3 also rans for the next round of the Print Comp!
Salon acceptances: BPS photographers are now achieving large numbers of salon acceptances and constraints on time and space mean we can't include them all. So please only advise of awards or other milestones.
Contrary to popular belief, I do not possess psychic powers and need you to tell me if you've had successes. If you want to blow your own trumpet (or someone else's), then this is the place to do it. Please let me know and I'll include details in a future issue.
|
Would all members please note: before you plan your shoot and book your model, you should check whether the studio/clubroom will be free. This can be done easily and at any time by viewing the Clubroom Bookings calendar in the Members' Area of the BPS Website. Bookings can (and must) be made by contacting Mike Bigger at bookings@bristolphoto.org.uk.
Log in details to the Members' Area are at the end of this newsletter.
|
If you have something photographic that you want to sell, let me have the details and I will circulate them to a captive audience of photographers through the Newsletter - send to the usual address.
|
For those of you who aren't sure what MPAGB, EFIAP/s and many more such seemingly random collections of letters mean, just click here to download the list.
|
Please don't forget that if you change your
address (home or email), or gain additional photographic distinctions, it
would be appreciated if you could let the Membership Secretary know so that
she can keep her records up to date, this will also ensure that you continue
to receive your newsletters - please email all changes to membership@bristolphoto.org.uk
The distinctions we have on record are those
shown at the top of this newsletter, if they are wrong, please let Carol
know.
