Project Spotlight:
Kids in the Kitchen

On the 1st and 3rd Saturday of the month, L.A. Works’ volunteer project leader Andrea Schenck leads a volunteer based cooking and crafts project for the kids at The Center for Lifelong Learners. The center is a nonprofit that serves the community as a safe after-school center. The focus of “Kids in the Kitchen” is to provide a fun and safe environment where the kids have an opportunity to learn about cooking and crafts. Through cooking there are so many opportunities to learn – including math, science, reading, art and nutrition. The project hit a high when the children where successful at executing a Thanksgiving meal – we roasted Cornish game hens and called them mini “turkeys”. The children did it all, from cleaning the birds (most of the children had never touched raw poultry), dressing, basting, making a gravy and of course eating their perfectly roasted hens!
Leimert Park Village, the historical enclave of black culture and arts in Los Angeles, has been showing signs of new life lately with a new monthly arts walk, music and arts festivals each summer, and the opening of a studio by internationally renowned artist Mark Bradford.

With such positive momentum driving interest to this hidden neighborhood, L.A. Works is excited to partner with the community, including Ben Caldwell, proprietor of the new media education center Kaos Network and a Leimert Park mainstay, to support residents in their work to establish Leimert Park as a black center of culture and a model of self-determination. Follow us on twitter and become a Facebook Fan to stay ahead of the news about L.A. Works Day 2011 on July 16th in celebration of our 20th anniversary!

Chavez Day of Service a Success!
L.A. Works community volunteers and LAUSD school children celebrated service and honored Chavez’s birthday with a project in Echo Park to create community murals for local schools and libraries. Volunteers did a fabulous job setting up the paint areas for muralist Oscar Magallanes and kids as well as interacting with the children throughout the morning! BusinessWorks Buzz
Jonathan Club volunteers built garden beds in the kindergarten area for herbs, flowers and vegetables, planted flowers and shrubs along both sides of the entrance ramp, and painted bright murals across the campus.

Jonathan Club Commits to Castelar
Fifty Jonathan Club members spent a Saturday morning in March painting and planting at Castelar Elementary School. Castelar Elementary School is a K-5 school with about 700 students in Historic Chinatown. Chinatown has been a gateway community for immigrants for many years, making Castelar one of the most diverse schools in the city. The club members enjoyed their volunteer experience with L.A. Works so much that they are considering additional ways to support the community, like adopting Castelar for the year and completing additional service projects there. In Memory of Mark Meinhart

We are saddened to announce the February 28 passing of Mark Meinhart, a valued member of the L.A. Works family.  Mark served as L.A. Works’ Corporate Relations Liaison from 2004 – 2009.  He played a key role in connecting the Los Angeles corporate community to L.A. Works Day, Martin Luther King, Jr Day of Service as well as our monthly BusinessWorks projects that benefit local schools and nonprofit organizations.

Mark believed in service. He was a tireless advocate for L.A. Works.  As many of you know, Mark was a great storyteller with a fabulous sense of humor.  He will be missed.  He passed after a brief battle with cancer.  Mark’s survivors include his wife Becky and his son Nick.  If you would like to contribute to a support fund for his family, please send a check to L.A. Works (570 W. Avenue 26, Suite 400; Los Angeles CA 90065) with Nicolas Meinhard in the memo line. We will send the donations to the family for a scholarship fund that has been set up for Nicholas.

Call to Action

Share some Spare Airline Miles??
Registration for the 2011 National Conference on Volunteering and Service (June 6-8) is now open!  L.A. Works staff looks forward to being a part of the world's largest gathering of volunteer leaders  from the nonprofit, corporate and government  sectors.  The conference promises to be a powerful event, attracting more than 4,500 service leaders to share best practices and empower us all to act. But, as you might imagine, a trip like this takes resources... L.A. Works is requesting donations of airline miles to fly two staff members to New Orleans for the conference in June. Please email Debbie if you might be willing to donate your miles to get the staff to this important conference on service. Thanks!!!

Pick a Date, Any Date...
Website Tip of the Month

Here’s our first in a series of website tips that we are sharing to stay true to our mission to make volunteering in LA easy and accessible! On our new website, the easiest way to find projects that are led by L.A. Works volunteer project leaders is to go to the volunteer calendar that now has its own image on the right side of our homepage, halfway down… then when you are there, select “Opportunity Type: Managed by Us” to find over 90 projects each month that are convenient, do not require an orientation or a long-term commitment. Helping Japan
You can help respond to the Japan Earthquakes and Tsunami. Our HandsOn Tokyo affiliate is continuing to monitor the situation and will be identifying volunteer appropriate activities. For now, you can register your interest to volunteer for potential upcoming volunteer opportunities related to the relief and recovery of earthquake and tsunami impacted communities by registering with HandsOn Tokyo. If you live outside of Japan, volunteer opportunities may take longer due to need to find proper accommodations and support for international volunteers. If you register your interest to volunteer, as soon as volunteer opportunities become available HandsOn Tokyo will send you an email updating you on those opportunities. For those seeking family or friends in the devastated areas click here. Connect with other US Based organizations involved in the response here.

Save Service in America
We know that in February, the House of Representatives proposed the elimination of the Corporation for National and Community Service.  The latest short-term budget for the government expires on April 8.  Before that date, Congress will have difficult decisions to make regarding federal spending for FY 2011. We also anticipate this week that the House Leadership will release its FY2012 budget proposal.   We must continue to advocate on behalf of exemplary service programs such as AmeriCorps, RSVP and Foster Grandparents and the Volunteer Generation Fund. MORE >>>
