Next Wednesday sees the welcome return to BPS of acclaimed landscape and wildlife photographer Guy Edwardes BA Hons. Guy will be presenting his talk entitled A Professional Approach to Outdoor Photography. The talk includes over three hundred images, most of which have been taken over the last two years. The images help to illustrate some of the methods Guy uses to capture his favourite wildlife and landscape photographs. The presentation is comprised of two halves, each roughly an hour in length.
Techniques such as painting with torchlight, shooting wildflowers with long telephoto lenses and how to approach wildlife are discussed in detail. He also touches on some of the techniques he uses in post-processing, with live Lightroom and Photoshop demonstrations. This presentation is all about tips and advice so you can be sure to learn something new and will hopefully be inspired to get out there with your camera to experiment for yourself.

We have received a number of responses to the recently initiated review of how the club competitions are designed and run. We are grateful to all those who did respond for their time and their ideas. These have been collated and were discussed at the recent Council meeting. It is important that whilst they have the title of competitions, they should also be enjoyable and offer a way of obtaining useful commentary on the work of entrants. Most of the responses were positive about much of the present set up.
At the Council meeting a number of changes were discussed, with two ideas being taken on for further development.
- Some club members feel that their style or approach to photography is not always fully appreciated. So, one development to be considered is that each Bi-monthly Advanced competition round should be partially devoted to a specific genre of photography, for example travel or street photography, much as in the present Annual Competition.
- Secondly, there is the feeling that members constantly winning in the Advanced group limits the chances of others' work being sufficiently recognised. So, a second idea to be developed is that of creating an Advanced 'Winners' group of recent past overall winners. They would make up a separate group for the competition, thereby allowing other members a better chance of having their efforts and skills recognised.
These ideas are to be further developed with a view to implementing them next year on a trial basis. The competition secretaries will keep you informed of developments!
If you would like to read all the original responses, please email one of us and we'll send you a copy.

Members may be interested to know that, following my pleas in the newsletter, 41 members of the Society eventually entered the 2017 Bristol Salon. Following a very slow start in November, entries started to come in pretty quickly during the final couple of weeks with the final figures being 10,511 images from 1,056 photographers. These will all be judged over the weekend of 17-19 February. Quite why entrants always leave it to the last minute, I don't know, but over 50% of the entries came in the last week, with one well known local photographer (not BPS) managing to get his entry in with just 1 minute to spare. Not bad bearing in mind he has been emailed on quite a few occasions since mid-November!

BPS recently took part in the PAGB Cup for PDI Open & Nature images. In the Open Cup we came 16th out of 98 clubs and in the Nature Cup we came 23rd out of 116 clubs. Well done and thanks to those members who provided images.

f11 Magazine - This is a free on-line magazine which carries many excellent editorials featuring well known (and some not so well known) photographers. Although the magazine is produced in New Zealand, many of the articles are of global interest. This edition includes an article on Matt Emmett, who you may remember gave us an excellent talk at the club last September. You can view/download the magazine by following this link.

The WCPF Members' Exhibition is open for entry, the closing date is 4 March. This is a competition for individuals who are members of WCPF member clubs. There are 3 print sections, Monochrome, Colour and Nature. In the Projected Image class, there are 3 sections - General, Nature and Creative. The entries are judged and the selected images will be exhibited later in the year at Bovey Tracey Golf Club followed by a two-day exhibition at the BPS clubrooms. More details on the WCPF website. The closing date coincides with WCPF Council meeting on 4 March and our representative, Danny Heaton, will be able to take your entries with him. If you have any queries you can contact Danny by email danny.heaton@btopenworld.com or you can collar him at any meeting.

The WCPF Knightshayes Trophy is nearly upon us and members are
invited to enter. The competition is organised by the WCPF and members
may enter up to two prints (mounted on 50 x 40 cm card) on the subject "Diffraction".
The closing date is 5 February when prints should be handed in at DPIC
in Exeter. Some BPS members will be going to DPIC (see above item) so it should be fairly
easy to organise for the prints to be taken down. More details can be
found here. |

There are three members who have had work selected for the RPS Members Biennial Print Exhibition, John Chamberlin, Andrew Wood and Barry Mead (Barry's print was the Mad Hatter, shown above). I don't think there will be too many clubs with three members being represented in this prestigious exhibition, so well done to all three.

Salon acceptances: BPS photographers are now achieving large numbers
of salon acceptances and constraints on time and space mean we can't
include them all. So please only advise of awards or other
milestones.
Contrary to popular belief, I do not possess psychic powers and need you to tell me if you've had successes. If you want to blow your own trumpet (or someone else's), then this is the place to do it. Please let me know and I'll include details in a future issue.
