Dear Neighbor,
Happy Pride 🏳️🌈 Month! Here are your June updates.
Addressing Public Safety Concerns
Recently, a resident of the 1100 block of Bloomfield St. alerted me to a hazardous condition caused by a sinking gas pipe in the road. A family member had already fallen and twisted her ankle at the site.
The same day, I worked with the City, sharing photos and information with PSE&G, which promptly coordinated a response with Mayor Bhalla, City Engineer Olga Garcia, and Diana Aviles, Hoboken’s Director of Parks, Recreation & Public Works, to repair and reset the gas valve the next week.
If I can help you or your family address public safety concerns like this one, please contact me at HobokenPhil@gmail.com.
The “Curb Reimagined” Program
The City’s Department of Transportation & Parking has launched a public engagement phase for "The Curb Reimagined," aiming to optimize curbside space for safety, sustainability, and economic growth. The plan will include strategies for managing loading zones, parking, bus stops, bike lanes, and outdoor dining. Partners Kimley-Horn and Populus are creating a public digital map of current curbside regulations.
The project will analyze Hoboken's parking supply and demand, both on-street and off-street, identifying improvement opportunities, and exploring technology — like sensors and digital signage — to enhance parking access. To learn more and provide your valuable feedback visit the project website, which includes a video and online survey (closing June 28th at 4 pm).
Congratulations to Congressman Rob Menendez and Thanks to Mayor Bhalla
Last week, for the first time we can recall, Hoboken voters had a meaningful choice for Congress on the Democratic Primary ballot. I supported Mayor Bhalla’s Congressional campaign and was impressed with his strong showing in Hoboken, where he decisively won more than 60% of the vote city-wide in a three-candidate contest, winning all 6 wards, prevailing with the widest victory margin in the 5th Ward (that I represent) — earning more than 66% of the 5th Ward vote.
It’s not easy taking on party bosses, the county line, and shaking up politics as usual. Thanks to Mayor Bhalla for taking on this challenging fight and giving the voters of the 8th Congressional District a meaningful “election” rather than a preordained “selection” to choose our Congressional representative.
Congratulations to Congressman Rob Menendez on his decisive, hard-fought primary election victory. I look forward to continuing to work with Congressman Menendez and his office on improving the quality of life for all Hoboken residents and the residents of the Eighth Congressional District.
Gun Buyback Event
The Hoboken Police Department is hosting a gun buyback event on June 22nd. Residents can voluntarily surrender up to three firearms for cash, no questions asked.
The City will fund this program to take guns off the street and combat gun violence. This event will be held at Hoboken Police Headquarters, 106 Hudson St., from 8 am to 4 pm. Participants will receive cash immediately after surrendering their firearms, with amounts based on the type of firearm:
- Inoperable: $40 each
- Rifle/Shotgun: $200 each
- Handgun (semi-automatic/revolver): $250 each
- Assault Weapon/Illegal: $350 each
Participants are encouraged to register and sign up here, or print a form here. No ID is required, and registrants can be anonymous.
