The band itself is present, performing shining interpretations of their signature tracks like Achilipú and A Mí Me Gusta Mi Pueblo, but the truly cool stuff here is the interpretations of their material by the likes of Domingo Quiñones, Ismael Miranda, José Alberto "El Canario," La India, Tito Rojas, Issac Delgado, Michael Stuart, Luisito Carrion, Willie Colón, NG2, Carolina La O and others. Wow. You heard right, folks, the royal carpet was rolled out for this project, and some of these tracks are slammin'. Now it's this stuff, directed by Isidro Infante, that offers unexpected moments of pure salsa greatness.

El Son De Altura BIS /$16.98 (original import) Originally released: 2010 Category: SALSA/SON; SALSA CUBANA; CUBA EditorsPick: Like a magician who keeps astounding his audience, each new Adalberto Alvarez project achieves a level of beauty and soul that would be rare for any artist to pull out of a hat just a single time. Here's a guy who, in his fourth decade of recording, has produced dozens of amazing albums at that level. His skillful mix of salsa-son-timba and rumba is well known, and even expected. But what what gets you each time is how pristine each new project is, his his vision disarmingly clear. El Son De Altura is nearly a Cuban music history lesson in disguise, but you would never really think of it that way when listening for listening's sake. The music Alvarez weaves is so intricately nuanced with the different threads of Cuban flavors that you stop thinking in terms of genres and generations... it just comes off as great music; lush, churning, and bubbling with life and spirits. Yeah, it's a great dance record, but listen to this record carefully. There are special moments you won't want to miss. With guests Julito Padrón, César López, Grupo Rumbatá De Camagüey, and legendary pianist Frank Fernandez who, accompanied by Maria Victoria Rodriguez and Dorgeris Alvarez, completes this project with a live interpretation of the beautiful bolero Canción para Mamá Rosa. ... continues (BP)

Afrocubism Nonesuch /$18.98 (original import) Originally released: 2010 Category: LATIN JAZZ; AFRO-CUBAN JAZZ EditorsPick: A simply astounding blend of Cuban and African flavors. Not many people are aware of it, but this album was supposed to be made in 1996. The Africans didn't show up for the session in Havana, but the Cubans recorded anyway and the result was the Buena Vista Social Club! So now, 14 years later, producer Nick Gold revives the original idea with Afrocubism, this new stunning project made up of esteemed Cuban and African musicians. Very Highly Recommended!
