Hello Firstname

Wednesday 7 December
Next Wednesday, 7 December, we have a visit from Rosemary Wilman FRPS AFIAP BPE5*, who will be presenting her talk called An Evening of Contrasts. Rosemary's photographic interests are diverse and include travel, landscape, natural history and 'whatever takes my eye'.  Most creative aspects of her work are in camera with the computer used to control image quality.
In 2011 Rosemary completed two years as President of The Royal Photographic Society and now enjoys more time for her own photography.  She is currently one of the Chairs of the Society's Licentiate Distinction Panel.  A member of both Epsom Camera Club and Molesey Photographic Club, Rosemary lectures, judges and also enters exhibitions.
To see some of Rosemary's work why not visit her website at www.wilmanphoto.co.uk

Mobile Phones
Despite the item a few weeks ago concerning mobile phones, members are still using them during meetings. It is annoying to members in close proximity to the "offenders", especially during projected image evenings as the light from the phone screens is particularly distracting. Whether taking notes, playing games or checking for incoming texts, it is something that is causing considerable annoyance and discomfort to others; so please try to live without the wretched machines for a couple of hours on a Wednesday evening (or any other meeting) and think of your fellow members.

Membership Age Limits
Members should be made aware that Council have agreed on an amendment to the age limit for membership of BPS. We have up until now allowed people to join the Society from the age of 16. The following have prompted Council to increase the minimum age for membership from 16 to 18 years of age:

  1. Nature of material that may be shown in a meeting being ‘after the watershed’ material (figure studies/nudes etc.)
  2. Legal restraints on anyone under 18 entering into a contract (membership is a contract), this especially applies as we are a limited company and a charity.
  3. The need for a safeguarding policy and process to be put in place to protect under 18s. (see the recent problems encountered by the FA!!)

Bristol International Salon of Photography 2017
Now is the time send in your entry to the 2017 Bristol Salon and give yourself the chance of some glory on the international photography scene.

For those of you who aren't too sure what the Bristol Salon is: it is an international photographic exhibition that has been running since the mid 1940s and is the largest exhibition of its type in the UK attracting entries from nearly 70 different countries. Entrants submit up to 16 images across 4 sections (Open, Monochrome, Photo Travel and Nature) which are put before a panel of selectors who pick the top 20% to 30% or so to be accepted. Entry for BPS members is free as long as we receive your entry before 21 January, after that you will have to pay the full fee. This might seem like a long way off, but with Christmas and the New Year coming up you'll soon find that the closing date is upon you, so beat the rush and get your entry in now!

To help you with your entry there is a small tutorial that can be downloaded by following this link. When entering, be sure to tick the box on the first page of the entry system to say that you are a BPS member and fill in your BPS membership number which you will find at the top of this newsletter; when you get to the payment page at the end, click ALREADY PAID.

Here's hoping that we see a rush of entries, but in the meantime if you have any queries, feel free to email me at chairman@bristolsalon.co.uk

Full details can found on the BPS website http://www.bristolphoto.org.uk/.

All the best

WCPF Digital Projected Image Competition (DPIC)
DPIC is nearly upon us again, so Pete McCloskey will soon be putting together an entry of 18 images to represent BPS in this annual regional inter-club competition. Last year BPS came joint runners up with Exmouth PG and we only lost out on a place at the National Finals at Warwick by dint of the fact that Exmouth had gained more awards than us. The date for the competition is Sunday 5 February at the Corn Exchange, Exeter. Tickets went on sale 1 December. For further details, you can download the flyer here.

WCPF Knightshayes Trophy
The WCPF Knightshayes Trophy is nearly upon us and members are invited to enter. The competition is organised by the WCPF and members may enter up to two prints (mounted on 50 x 40 cm card) on the subject "Diffraction". The closing date is 5 February when prints should be handed in at DPIC in Exeter. Some BPS members will be going to DPIC so it should be fairly easy to organise for the prints to be taken down. More details can be found here.

Dates For Your Diary

12 Nov - 5 Mar
Wildlife Photographer of the Year 2016: at M Shed.
The world-renowned wildlife photography competition from the Natural History Museum returns to M Shed with 100 stunning images; from balletic whales to lizard-chasing parakeets, urban visitors to fantastical landscapes, this year’s selection is strong on visual drama and narrative. Full details here.
6 Dec An Evening of Celebration at Bristol Folk House. The Bristol Folk House Darkroom is a year old and to mark this occasion they would like to invite you to an evening of celebration, which will include meet and greet, book signing and information. Free to attend by all. Further details here.
14 Jan Absolutely nothing to do with photography, but the BBC programme Flog It will be at Bristol Cathedral from 9.30am to 4.00pm. It's free, which should appeal to some members, and will be a good opportunity for some of the Canon users to get rid of some obsolete kit and, with the proceeds, perhaps graduate up to Nikon! www.facebook.com/bbcflogit/
5 February WCPF DPIC at the Corn Exchange, Exeter. Tickets on sale now.  Price (£6.00 + booking fee) from the Corn Exchange.

Trumpet Blowers' Corner
Salon acceptances: BPS photographers are now achieving large numbers of salon acceptances and constraints on time and space mean we can't include them all. So please only advise of awards or other milestones.

Contrary to popular belief, I do not possess psychic powers and need you to tell me if you've had successes. If you want to blow your own trumpet (or someone else's), then this is the place to do it. Please let me know and I'll include details in a future issue.
