Psalm 8:9 O LORD, our Lord, How excellent is Your name in all the earth!
HOW EXCELLENT IS YOUR NAME
This psalm ends the same way that it begins, with David proclaiming how great and excellent the name of the Lord is.
Anyone who has seen the Rocky Mountains will know what an incredible sight they are--how the mountains soar up reaching into the clouds; or how standing on the top of them you can see hundreds of miles of plains and rivers, of meadows and forest stretched out below you.
When the psalmist considers God and what He has done for us he is struck by the same enchantment. As we wonder at the height of those mountains, so the psalmist wonders at the height of God's love and care for men. As we see the mountains as a picture of strength which can not be equaled by any force on earth, so the psalmist knows that the strength of God is greater still--and all of it is used for our benefit, to provide for us and take care of us and to give us salvation through Jesus Christ.
Sometimes people are tempted to think that it is easier to worship God and get to know him out in nature where they see all the wonderful things that He has created, yet when we gather together to hear the Word of God, we hear about something that He did which is far greater and more majestic than even the stateliest mountain.
O LORD, our Lord, How excellent is Your name in all the earth!
