James 1:5 If any of you lacks wisdom, he should ask God, who gives generously to all without finding fault, and it will be given to him.
ASK SOMEBODY WHO KNOWS
Before Christopher Columbus sailed across the Atlantic to America most people thought the world was flat. They figured if you sailed far enough away from land your ship would fall off the edge of the world. Some even said that you wouldn't make it to the edge of the world because huge sea monsters would sink your ship before you got there.
Later, people realized that the world is round. And, while there are some huge creatures out in the ocean, there aren't any that are going to eat your ship.
God tells us that if we want to be wise about something, we should pray to God and ask Him to help us learn. Since God loves us, He will help us become wise.
It makes a lot of sense to ask God to help us learn to communicate. He's the one who made language for us to use. It makes a lot of sense to ask God to help us learn about history. He's been around for all of it! It makes a lot of sense to ask God to help us learn about anything in this world, because He made it all. He knows it inside and out.
It also makes a lot of sense to ask God to help us understand what we read in the Bible. God had the Bible written for us. It is how God teaches us about who He is and what He is like. God wants us to know Him, and so if we ask Him to help us understand what His Bible says, He'll help!
God helps us understand what John's gospel is about (and really what the whole Bible is about) in the following verse: "But these are written that you may believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God, and that by believing you may have life in his name" (John 20:31).
