AMPS at BSC Expo
David Lascelles & Brian Simmons manning the AMPS stand.
Brian Simmons reports:
This year, with all suitable Studio space being fully booked, the 2016 BSC Expo was held on Friday 29th and Saturday 30th January at a new venue – The Battersea Evolution. This new purpose-built Exhibition Hall is situated in Battersea Park and provides an excellent home for the show. Attendance was high on both days aided by the location’s accessibility. The quantity of equipment and facilities continues to display the rapid changes in technology meeting, and even creating, new demands from film-makers. Ranging from small light-weight camera drones up to a two-seat autogyro, a multiplicity of increasingly LED-based lighting, digital camera systems, grip equipment and ever more sophisticated hardware; the tools available are continually improving. Adding to the mix were stands representing the BSC, ACO, GBCT, GTC, CCGB, and of course, AMPS – flying the flag for the 'other half' of the industry!

On the AMPS stand a presentation promoting the 3rd Annual AMPS Film Sound Award nominations was on display and over the two days Clive Derbyshire, David Lascelles, Shelly Jones and myself were there to ‘meet and greet’ visitors.

The opportunity to bump into old friends and colleagues makes for a pleasant and interesting excursion for our Production Sound members and, as ever, it was a pleasure to greet so many at the AMPS stand. We also had a number of enquiries for potential membership from several Sound practitioners and students, the location of the Show an encouragement for their visits.

If you couldn’t make it on this occasion, or thought it of little interest, do re-consider and plan to attend the BSC Expo next year – you will be pleasantly surprised!
Whoa There, I Really Wasn't Expecting That!
Wonderful Netflix segment from The Late Show with Stephen Colbert which includes our very own Chris Munro!

Joint Guilds Screening Dates & Mailing List
AMPS can confirm the available Joint Guilds 2016 screening dates at the John Barry Pinewood Theatre. Films often become available for viewing with only a few days notice, so it may be wise to put these dates in your diary. See the dates here - www.amps.net/resource-documents. You have to be logged into the Members Area to see the document.

Also, to receive up to date screening information, members need to susbscribe to the Screening Mailing List at - www.amps.net/members-area/mailing-list.php. Just tick the 'Screenings' box.
New Sound Theatre at Technicolor
Technicolor Sound Services, London, is proud to announce the opening of its new 7.1 sound theatre in their premier Lexington Street facility, Soho. The expansion comes after a hugely successful first 18 months for the team, who relocated from Perivale to Soho in the middle of 2014. Sound Services have enjoyed working on some of the year’s most successful TV dramas including Endeavour, The Go-Between and And Then There Were None. They are particularly proud to have looked after all nine series of Lewis.

The talented sound team look forward to another busy year covering projects such as Poldark Series 2 and Victoria.

When The Game Was Up for the World's Most Famous
Sound Designer
Peter Hodges recently sent me this gem. Back in 2009, some of you may remember the occasion of 'Sound Designer' Brice Carrington being put behind bars for four years for fraud.

He falsely claimed that he was a three-time Oscar-winner and had worked on almost every Hollywood blockbuster title imaginable, including Jurassic Park, Spiderman, King Kong, The Fantastic Four, Miami Vice, The Incredible Hulk... and the list goes on and on.

In reality, he never made a single sound for any of those movies, let alone won an Oscar. But his story was so good that he managed to defraud investors of $3.6 million!
