Friends of Freedom International has recently joined the chorous of the misguided in directing vitamin consumers contact the Whitehouse and Congress in an effort to rein in US Codex Manager Dr.Ed Scarbrough who will be the US Codex Delegate to the 28th General Session of Codex in Rome in July.
While Friends of Freedom is at least not directing people to communicate DIRECTLY with Scarbrough (as so called "Citizens for Health" and so called "Natural Solutions Foundation" are) (they're asking people to approach him via Bush and via Congress), their strategy is STILL just as DANGEROUS and just as FLAWED as these other organizations, for the following reasons:
1. The USA has already committed to RATIFYING the Codex vitamin standard. They've declared their position here: http://www.friendsoffreedominternational.org/ActionLetter/US_Supports_Risk_Assessment_1.pdf
2. The likelihood of Bush reining in Scarbrough is extremely unlikely given the strong ties Bush has with the pharmaceutical industry: http://www.thinkandask.com/news/fdadruglaw.html:

Between 2002-2004 pharmaceutical companies cushioned George W. Bush's campaign with $47,000,000. in soft money contributions. Of that Eli Lilly contributed $1,430,000., Astra Zeneca (UK) contributed $91,000., Glaxo Smith Kline (UK) contributed $310,000.,
Genentech (Switzerland) contributed $50,000., Hoffman La Roche (Switzerland) contributed $42,000., Solvay Pharmaceuticals (Belgium) contributed $3,000.
3. Aside from this, consider THIS about Scarbrough:
In 2000, when I approached him requesting that he remove Dr.Beth Yetley as US Codex Delegate to the CCNFSDU (Codex Committee on Nutrition and Food for Special Dietary Uses) citing abundant evidence that she had violated the law at 2 Codex meetings that I'd attended as an observer in '96 and in '98, including evidence that she ignored these 2 letters from Congress http://iahf.com/codex/letter1.gif and http://www.iahf.com/codex/letter2.gif which ordered her to obey the law and to not put the fruadulent, pharma funded, unscientific paper on the table at Codex titled "A Risk Assessment Model for Establishing Upper Levels for Nutrients" she ignored Congress.
Then in 2001 the Congressional Oversight Hearing that I pushed for for 5 years to try to bring all this to light was WHITEWASHED, so none of this came out.
(Still think it makes any sense to try to rein in Scarbrough? He covered all of this up, and congress let him do it.)
Aside from this, however, even if Scarbrough DID do what we wanted, and opposed ratification of the Codex vitamin standard, the EU by ITSELF can force consensus at Codex. Our sad reality is that the USA doesn't wield any more clout within the corrupt Codex process than Denmark or Norway do.
WE MUST KILL CAFTA TO SAVE OUR COUNTRY AND TO BLOCK HARMONIZATION TO CODEX
The SPS language in CAFTA forces harmonization to Codex standards. Article 3 of SPS reads "To harmonize sanitary and phytosanitary measures on as wide a basis as possible, Members SHALL base their food safety measures on international standards, guidelines or recommendations."
I'm a realist. I've been to two Codex meetings in Germany and demonstrated against a third. For 5 years I pushed for Congressional oversight on Codex and got stonewalled. I had serious death threats for my trouble and the hearing was whitewashed on March 20, 2001. I can see the writing on the wall.
We have no power to influence the unelected bureaucrats who make the decisions at Codex, but we DO have power over our Congress, and we CAN kill CAFTA, we MUST kill CAFTA because it contains language that would harmonize us to Codex standards and a lot else besides.
We are losing our country. If we don't kill CAFTA, we won't kill FTAA which would follow. FTAA would create a version of the European Common Market in our hemisphere and thats what spawned creation of the EU. FTAA is intended to create an EU in our hemisphere.
Our trade deficit has ballooned to over $617 Billion due to the failed policies of NAFTA and other trade agreements. CAFTA and FTAA threaten to continue this downward spiral and totally destroy the value of the dollar.
Despite this, INCREDIBLY, CAFTA was just voted out of committee in both the Senate and House and before the August recess, it will have been voted on in both the House and Senate with only very limited debate allowed under Fast Track rules. It could be brought to the floor of the House THIS MONTH before the July 4th recess.
Right now, the Whitehouse is lobbying like crazy, backed by the Pharma Cartel and other multinational lobbyists who are trying to twist the arms of any member of congress who are holding out against them.
Summer is the hardest time of year to alert the public to take action on things like this. I also need you to schedule appointments with your Senators and Congressmen via their state and district offices in your home state if you live too far from Washington DC to get there. I need you to call your Senators and Congressmen via the Capital Switchboard at 202-225-3121 to ask for the number of their state office(Senators) and for their District offices (Congressmen) so you can make personal visits to express your strong concern on this Codex vitamin, Anti CAFTA, anti Globalization issue.
