Ravelympics Congratulations... I Knit Day... Sock Contest... Net Granny

Bank holiday greetings to you

We hope this newsletter finds you well, that you have thoroughly enjoyed the Olympics and have used the time productively to make a champion of a creation.

If you have been part of the Ravelympics 2008, congratulations on how ever far you managed to get with your project(s). No progress is too small in our eyes. For those of you who crossed the finish line wearing your project we salute you and play which ever national anthem you fancy.

This week we’re warming up for I Knit Day, sparking your sock interest with a contest and some granny power.

The last few meetings have seen us enjoying the ever more popular EV, where we took over the deli and said hello to our newest (and cutest) S&B member Frieda at just seven weeks old! Of course she donned S&B created knitted garments and looked fabulous.

And back to the South Bank in the Royal Festival Hall, we compared our Ravelympic progress and triumphs whilst soaking in the culture, as the Wicked Witch of the East cackled away in the wings.

Stitch and Sipping and Singing

Details of the next meeting:

We return to the heart of Covent Garden this week, with plenty of space for us all to enjoy this great location, and with the safety of a roof to keep us dry. We’ll be in the Piazza, downstairs, with passers by watching us knit to our heart’s content. There is always plenty of amusement at this location, with musicians, performers and the general public asking us what we are doing. Knitting in public, of course!

Stitch and Spending All Your Money Even Though You Shouldn’t

S&B Londoners everywhere are scraping together their pennies and charging up their debit cards for the 6th of September and I Knit Day.

Yes, the I Knit boys (famed for the Stitch n Bitch Day last year and their yarn shop) have turned it all I Knitty, and are offering a day of knit and crochet goodness for all. Hurrah!

Events on the day promise to be all rather fabulous, the biggest of which will be a presentation by Stephanie Pearl-McPhee, the Yarn Harlot herself (we are truly not worthy).

All our favourites will be there too with Jane’s Waller’s Vintage Knits, the lovely Lion Brand Yarn-flavoured Banyan Tree Yarns, home-grown Fyberspates, and marvellous oooos and ahhhhs for the Knitted Gingerbread House and other huge woolly lovelies.

Pootle along here to buy your tickets and feast your eyes here for news on the day. See you there (in front of you in the queue for the best yarn if we can help it).

Stitch and Seriously Colossal Sock Contest

At S&B London meetings we meet many sock addicts (you know who you are). If you’re obsessed by lace, cable, rib, Magic Loop, DPNs, short-row heels, endless sock-yarn stashing, heel flaps, self-patterning yarn or the old toe-up vs. cuff-down debate then you should probably admit to your addiction and read on.

Dealing with your addiction may be hard but we have the ideal tonic: the Think Outside the SOX Contest.

The idea is simple.  Amateur sock knitters submit a pair of their most creative socks to the competition for the chance to win up to $6000 (that’s still a lot in pounds you know).

There are numerous categories into which you can enter your socks, from Get Into the Groove to Socks to Dye For and XMAS Sock (ideal for those who suffer from Second Sock Syndrome).

You can find all the details of the competition, including the rules, categories and entry form on the competition website.  Entries must be received by January 1st 2009. Happy sock knitting!

Stitch and Rent a Gran

Are you constantly asked by friends and family to knit them a pair of socks before your own? Do you want to dazzle a special someone with knitting skills you haven’t yet developed? Do you like the look of socks but simply can’t be bothered to knit them? We have found the website for you.

Net Granny provides you with the best of the best, when it comes to old ladies churning out socks at a rate of knots. This German website was launched in 2006 and has since grown to have 15 dedicated grandmothers to knit socks on demand. They claim that ‘granny power is the new organic’ and we would not like to argue, as it’s not respectful to disagree with your elders.

You are able to choose which particular granny you want to knit for you, based on some amazing mug shots. Each has an indication of how fast they will be able to whip up a pair for you and a quote in German which is great fun to translate into English. Our favourite is ‘Without cord thing, I fall asleep before the television’.

So if you’re not looking forward to turning a heel, or want to cheat on some of your Christmas knitting, get someone else’s gran to do it instead.

That’s about all we can cram on our sock stix this bank holiday. We hope you spend the rest of the day chilling out with some well earned stitching and we look forward to seeing you at I Knit day – don’t be afraid to come over and say hello, we won’t poke you with needles, we promise.
