Hello, Firstname

Wednesday 29 July - Zoom

Next Wednesday, 29 July, we welcome to our screens, Martin Addison FRPS who will be presenting his talk called
'Looking Outside the Frame' (subtitle is 'how not to take competition winners!') The aim of this presentation is to explore different ways of seeing photographs, looking at many different techniques designed to make you stand out from the other photographers around you. Taking a different approach is unlikely to win you prizes but will result in more diverse and interesting images which will give you greater satisfaction.

Why not visit Martin's website - click here.
Meeting details are:

    The links to all meetings can be found in the Members' Area of the BPS website, details at the foot of this newsletter. 5 August: Pre-register
    On the 5 August we will be having a third international zoom talk, 2nd time from America.  Steve Gettle will be talking and showing us through his images taken from all over the world, accompanied by some images by Nicole Sudduth. They will be hosting this zoom session so in order to get the invite to join in we (the club members) need to register.

    They don't want the whole world joining in!! Follow this  link to register.

    PLEASE REMEMBER - YOU WILL NOT BE ABLE TO JOIN IN THE MEETING UNLESS YOU HAVE PRE-REGISTERED.

    As they are offering this presentation to the club members FOC, you will receive a newsletter 3 or 4 times a year, but can "unsuscribe" at any time - a small issue for an excellent night of stunning images.

    Follow this link to visit Steve's website.

    BPS Competitions: 2020/21
    We have planned next season’s competitions as Digital Projected Image and Print as usual. Members must, however, be prepared for changes, some of which may be at fairly short notice. Read the weekly Newsletter carefully and stay alert for developments!

    Judges are booked and most have confirmed they are willing and able to operate by Zoom if we are still unable to meet in Unit 13.

    Depending on the circumstances, some or all of the Print competitions may run as DPI, although we hope to get back to prints as soon as possible.

    If Print rounds run as DPI, the points awarded will be included in the DPI competition league table points total.

    If Print rounds resume part way through the year, the points awarded from that time on will go towards a reconstituted print total.

Images submitted to this round will, according to the rules, also be eligible for the 2020-21 Creative competition, which we intend to run.

    Competition Entry Numbers

    Some competitions have in the last year attracted a large number of entries to the point where some judges have expressed disquiet.  We plan over the next year to reduce the number of entries where the judge, after discussion, wishes us to do so.

    If it becomes necessary, we propose to reduce entries to below 90.  We expect to do this by progressively removing entries in the following way:

    Step 1) Where an Advanced class member has an entry in the Prescribed category, their image number 2 in the Open category will be removed;

    Step 2) Image 3s in the Intermediate class will be removed;

    Step 3) Image 3s in the Club class will be removed;

    Step 4) Remaining image 2s in the Advanced Open category will be removed.

    Any images so removed will be eligible for entry in subsequent rounds.

    Projected Image Competition Secretary

    Using The Camera In Your Phone
    Back on 15 July we had a talk by Nigel Goldsmith called The Selfie Help Workshop. I'm sure that I'm not alone in saying that I wasn't in the least interested in taking serious pictures with my phone, but just joined the meeting to make up the numbers. However, come the end of the evening I was a convert and will from now on view the phone in my pocket as much as a camera as a phone. One thing that Nigel did promise, was that the slides from the talk would be made available to members and true to his word, you can now download them by following this link. To those who joined the meeting, these will provide a useful memory jogger, to those who didn't, I suggest that you too follow the link, you may then see your phone in a different light (not just something to be "switched on in emergencies!").

    PAGB Lockdown Archive
    PAGB e-news is inviting all readers to submit images of their Lockdown experience to be selected for what will become an historic permanent archive and a valuable record of the varied experiences of amateur photographers and their reaction to the pandemic.

    The theme is “My Lockdown Photography” and your pictures may record your life during this period, document some of the things you may have seen or simply be examples of your photographic activities whilst in isolation and what inspired you. Each image must have been made between 1 March and 30 June 2020.

    A selection of 100 will be compiled into a permanent gallery accessible online and the images will also be used to form a show, suitable to fill an evening, which Clubs will be able to download from the PAGB Recorded Lecture Service.

    Maximum 4 images per photographer. Each file should be titled “Your Name_Title of Image” and you should supply your photographic honours, the month each was taken, your Club and Federation. Whilst it isn’t essential, you are invited also to provide up to 30 words for each image explaining its significance, your reason for making it or the circumstances in which you took it. The story may be as important as the photograph.

    Each image should be no greater than 1600px horizontal x 1200px vertical, jpeg format in the sRGB colour space.

    The images and other information should be e-mailed to rod@creative-camera.co.uk to arrive by Saturday 15th August 2020.

    Trumpet Blower's Corner
    Salon acceptances: BPS photographers are now achieving large numbers of salon acceptances and constraints on time and space mean we can't include them all. So please only advise of awards or other milestones.
    Contrary to popular belief, I do not possess psychic powers and need you to tell me if you've had successes. If you want to blow your own trumpet (or someone else's), then this is the place to do it. Please let me know and I'll include details in a future issue.
