Hello Firstname

Double Issue
There will be no Newsletter next week as I will be away. Normal service will resume, hopefully, the following week.

Wednesday 7 June
Next week sees the culmination of the print season with the Annual Print Competition. This is being judged by Jenny Hibbert MPAGB AFIAP AWPF from South Wales. Jenny is a prolific photographer and traveller; unfortunately when I found her web page it seemed to have been hijacked by a shoe company, so here is the link to her Facebook page - click here.

Monday 12 June
The next DI meeting on Monday 12 June is two weeks away, so you have plenty of time to put together images to show, either prints of projected images (jpeg on USB flash drives only, please); and as a reward there are guaranteed to be some of Ashwin's, now famous, chocolate biscuits.

Wednesday 14 June
We have a welcome return by Tony Nutley with his talk his talk 40 years of photography in mainstream television and film - Part Two. He has been responsible for producing the major photography on dramas as diverse as Inspector Morse through to Thomas the Tank Engine, via Sharpe, Cadfael, Soldier Soldier, and Foyles War, plus hundreds of other household names. He works almost entirely with personalities from actors to musicians, royalty, and politicians.
For more about Tony's work, please visit is website at http://www.tonynutley.co.uk/

AGM - 5 July
Last week I attached a copy of the 2017 Report of the Council of Management, unfortunately I mentioned that the Full Statement of Financial Activities for the Year Ended 31 March 2017 was included, this was an error on my part as I had misread the document John sent, what it should have stated was:
  1. The full financial statements were not included in the attached documents as they are awaiting approval.
  2. A copy can be requested from the Secretary or Treasurer.
  3. Any questions regarding the accounts can be addressed to the Treasurer who will be happy to answer them treasurer@bristolphoto.org.uk.
Attached, this week, is the Proxy Voting form with the correct date.

Studio Group @ The AGM
The Studio Group competition will be held after the AGM on 5 July and will be for images taken during any of the studio group meetings that have taken place between 1 June 2016 and 31 May 2017. Any member who has attended these sessions can submit up to four images which they should rank in order of preference for being entered in the competition.
The images should be sent in an email with 'Studio Competition' in the subject line to: competitions@bristolphoto.org.uk by midnight on 24th June and should follow the normal rules for projected image competitions ie:
  1. If you do not receive a Submission Report, this may mean your images have not been received.
  2. Submissions can only be made by email and are not accepted on the night and cannot be made by CD, flash drive or memory stick.
  3. Please be aware that the images are handled automatically once loaded into the competition software and the software will reject incorrect images (too large or wrong naming pattern)
  4. Images must not be greater than 1400 pixels wide and 1050 pixels high - Note that Portrait format images must not be more than 1050 pixels high.
  5. Save the images as a JPG using the highest quality. (Other file types such as  TIFF or PSD will not be accepted).
  6. The projector uses the sRGB colour space and hence you should save the images using the sRGB colour profile. Other profiles (such as Adobe98 or ProPhoto) may result in incorrect display of the image.
  7. Name each file you enter in the following pattern.  Eg:-   01_Alexandrea_296S.jpg
  • 01, 02, 03, etc. to show order of preference.
  • underscore (not a hyphen)
  • Title of the image (which can contain spaces and hyphens but must not contain underscore)
  • underscore (not a hyphen)
  • Your Membership Number (shown on this newsletter) followed without a space by the letter S.
The images will be shown randomly in pairs at the following AGM on the 5th July 2016 and all present will vote on them on a knockout basis until we have an overall winner who will be presented with the studio trophy.
If you’ve enjoyed a studio group meeting please support this new competition, it is  a great chance both for the experienced members and for those new to competitions to try their hand.

President's Cup & Garmston Bowl
Advanced Warning - The closing date for the President's Cup and Garmston Bowl competitions is 7 June.
Garmston Bowl: This is a competition, open to all members, that is for a panel of 5 related prints on any subject.
President's Cup: This is a competition open to all members excluding holders of ARPS, EFIAP, DPAGB or EPSA and higher distinctions plus previous winners (of the cup). It will be judged as a panel of 3 related images on any subject. The images will be displayed at the competition individually as well as with the addition of an 'automated' triptych.

From the above, members will realise that this is a competition that excludes the more successful competition entrants, so it is an ideal opportunity for newer or less experienced members to enter a club competition.
A note for those newer to competitions: If you were at last week's Annual Projected Image Competition you will have heard the judge mention "key lines" several times. These are narrow (1 or 2 pixels) lines put around the edge of the image, this helps the viewer, and ultimately the judge, to see where the image stops and the screen starts. When viewed on your monitor at home the edge of the image is obvious, however when projected onto the club screen there are large areas of black surrounding the image. This means that a dark image will "bleed" out into these surrounding black areas and it will no longer be obvious where your image stops and the screen surround starts.

Photoshop For Beginners
Back in January of this year, BPS member Lee Spencer-Fleet initiated a pilot Digital Imaging course at the BPS club rooms: Photoshop for Photographers (Beginners). Following the success of this course, we are pleased to confirm that Lee will offer a repeat course this Autumn term on Thursday evenings, commencing 7 September.

Topics will include how to work with Layers; Layer Masks; Adjustment Layers; Sharpen Filters; Black & White; Panoramas; and more. This 14-week course is realistically priced at £150.00 and real value for money. It is another opportunity for members to get hands-on practice with their photo editing skills in a familiar and friendly environment with fellow members and an experienced trainer.

Although the course is aimed at Beginners it is also suitable for Intermediate users who want to build on their existing knowledge. Everyone is welcome.

Members will be offered priority but places are limited. Bookings will be taken from 1st July to 1st September to 2017. Click this link for full details and to download the Information Sheet.

Trumpet Blowers' Corner
Salon acceptances: BPS photographers are now achieving large numbers of salon acceptances and constraints on time and space mean we can't include them all. So please only advise of awards or other milestones.

Contrary to popular belief, I do not possess psychic powers and need you to tell me if you've had successes. If you want to blow your own trumpet (or someone else's), then this is the place to do it. Please let me know and I'll include details in a future issue.
