From the Church Guy
     Jackson is one great watchdog.
On a recent Wednesday night, at 11:30, Paula and I were sound asleep (we have long given up staying up late!).  Suddenly our black lab (named Jackson in honor of a $20 bet I lost to my wife about him) began to bay, jerking us awake.  I turned on the outside lights to discover a bear (probably 300 pounds) making hash out of Paula's bird feeders.
When a bear visits our house (this is not the first time), it is exciting, beautiful, and a little scary.  Nature close up is inspiring - and awe and fear are not far apart.
We got Jackson as a watchdog after we suffered a burglary in 2012.  He's doing his job with love and skill.  I just wanted to tell you this story to remind you to give thanks for the companion animals so many of us love...dogs, cats, birds, horses, hamsters, reptiles, fish...
Some time you might want to check out "A Song of Creation."   It's found in our Prayer Books as a canticle for worship in two versions: Rite l on page 47, and Rite ll on page 88.  Especially in summertime, when we tend to spend a little more time outdoors, it's the perfect poem with which to praise the Creator for the beautiful world in which we live. "Praise him and magnify him for ever!"
And keep your eyes peeled for bears.
                                                                               Father Mark +
The Church Guy is on vacation
Father Mark will be on vacation until July 24.  The Rev. Judith Kessler will be officiating on Sundays (for which the Rector thanks her!).  For emergencies, contact the church office, or wardens Faith White and Gary Graham, or our Dean and Deacon Dorothy Pierce.
Take Me Out to the Ballgame, Bishop!
Episcopal Night at the BMets is on Friday, July 12.  The area Episcopal Churches will be there.  Any who wish can join the combined choir to sing the National Anthem.  Bishop Skip Adams will throw out the first pitch, and fireworks follow the game.  Andy Pierce has tickets - $7 for adults, $5 for kids 13 and under.  (It is not clear whether the game will be played according to Rite l or Rite ll.)
Is there Church school durng the Summer?
Not this summer.  For a long time I have provided summer classes for the children during the summer months, but this year Father Mark said I should/could take the summer off.  I have purchased quiet activities for the children that attend church to work on during the 10 a.m. service.  They will be in a basket at the side door.  Please have your child only take one item.  (And if I'm in church and I notice a large number of children, I'll probably ask if they want to come down for a impromtu session - I have a few ideas on hand!)
I want to thank our wonderful teachers that have given of their time and talent to work with the children of St. Mark's.  We have been blessed with dedicated and caring volunteers.  They are: Pre-K Kindergarten: Kate Abbey, Judi Laine, Arden Meier; 1st - 3rd grades: Mandy Black, Lynne McRae, Diane Pierson, Caroline Thomas; 4th - 6th grades: Theresa Brom, Chris Sweet, Mina Tio.
Let's help some needy school children
Last year, our collection of school supplies for a local school district was a resounding success and a tremendous help.  And we gave you late notice last year!  This year we are more on the ball, and are starting a collection of school supplies this summer.  We will donate them to the Whitney Point School District this year, a district with a high percentage of students receiving lunch subsidies.  Pens, pencils, notebooks, binders...they will need it all, and we can help.  Bring it in anytime, and we'll pile it up!
 Come Play at the Park
Dorchester Park in Whitney Point, that is.  On Sunday, July 28, from 2:00 - 4:00 in the afternoon, people from St. Mark's are going to hang out at the park.  We'll get a pavilion there.  This is not a meal, so it's no work - sure, bring a snack or beverages to share, but no meal.  Bring Frisbees or footballs or volleyballs.  Bring a kayak or canoe.  Bring swim gear and get in the water.  Bring a book to read.  Or just bring a desire to relax with your church friends.  No stress, no cost, no worries - just a time of fun and fellowship!
 It's Air Conditioning Season!
Don't stay away from church because of heat.  Our air conditioning is wonderful.  (If you tend to be chilly and end up under one of the units, please bring a sweater - we don't want to turn the units off on hot days.)
