Hello Firstname

Wednesday 8 March
Next Wednesday we have a visit from Steve Richards who will be entertaining us with his talk: Making Every Photon Count. The talk will cover equipment choices, imaging techniques and image processing rather than being a showcase of Steve's work. However, if time allows, he will be happy to show examples of his astrophotographs.
Steve Richards is the author of Making Every Photon Count - a beginner’s guide to deep sky astro-photography, now in its third edition. As well as writing several columns for The Sky at Night Magazine every month, he has also written for Astronomy Now Magazine, BBC Focus Magazine and The Sunday Times.
Steve’s interest in astronomy started in late 2004 and these days he rarely uses an eyepiece, preferring instead to capture the beauty of the night sky with his specialised cameras.
More about Steve can be seen at www.nightskyimages.co.uk

Something On The Telly!
Mike Bigger has emailed me to let me know of a forthcoming programme on BBC4 at 9pm, next Monday, 6 March. The programme is called Britain in Focus: A Photographic History: this is Episode 1 of 3.

Series in which Eamonn McCabe celebrates Britain's greatest photographers, sees how science allowed their art to develop, and explores how they have captured our changing lives and country.
In the first of three programmes, he goes back to the 19th century to trace the astonishingly rapid rise of the photograph in British life. Eamonn explores the science behind early photography, and shows how innovative photographic techniques made possible the careers of pioneers like Roger Fenton and Julia Margaret Cameron. He sees how great figures of the age such as Queen Victoria and Isambard Kingdom Brunel were captured on camera, and revisits the Victorians' sense of wonder about the 'natural magic' of photography and the role it played in their lives.

Bristol Film & Video Society - Film Experiment Day
We have received the following invitation from Bristol Film & Video Society:

BFVS are holding an Experiment Day on Saturday 11 March, to which all BPS members are invited. It will be held in the Crypt of St Paul's Church, Coronation Rd, Southville.

It will be fun packed - trying out new ideas, taking risks, having fun and trying new filmic ideas, especially “in camera” techniques.

I am sure some of your members have cameras that will take video. If they have ever wanted to stretch their wings in this direction, here is their opportunity! We will have plenty of BFVS members on hand to help and advise.

Would you please circulate this email to your members? You are all cordially invited to take part at no cost. All you need to bring is -

•    food for the day, (08:00 - 20:00 latest)
•    a DSLR or similar camera which records video onto an SD card, and
•    a tripod to put it on. If they don't have a tripod, they may be able to borrow one.
Refreshments will be provided.

We are going to include these experiments -

In the first part of the day we will all work on 'Bullet Time' - This is the Big One.

In a nutshell what we are going to attempt is similar to the way this technique was developed for the Matrix films, but with the important difference that we are going to video the subject of the bullet time and then string together individual frames from the footage taken by an array of cameras placed around the subject, to simulate (initially anyhow) a fixed moment in time, but filmed from a moving view point. I hope that in successive film sessions we can then go on to show a succession of moments moving forward and backward in time and space, and also from a moving POV.

The video below explains how thousand of dollars were spent on bullet time for The Matrix: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uPNBdDNZbYk

Follow this link to see how we hope to do it with no budget!

We will start as early as possible. The crypt will be available from 08:00, so we hope to do our first shot in the next two hours after carefully setting the cameras up. This will be a basic shot of an object caught in mid air.

After some trials the footage will be entered into film editing software, and see how successful it has been, with a view to regrouping for more bullet time shots later. Whilst this is going on the other experiments can start. This is our chance to learn further new filming skills!

We have a number of planned experiments. Those planned so far are:

1. Experiments in simulated weightlessness e.g. out in space

2. Simulating bullet hits both on objects and people

3. Filming a fight

4. Animation using stop motion

Trumpet Blowers' Corner
Salon acceptances: BPS photographers are now achieving large numbers of salon acceptances and constraints on time and space mean we can't include them all. So please only advise of awards or other milestones.

Contrary to popular belief, I do not possess psychic powers and need you to tell me if you've had successes. If you want to blow your own trumpet (or someone else's), then this is the place to do it. Please let me know and I'll include details in a future issue.
