Revelation 1:5-6 To Him who loved us and washed us from our sins in His own blood, and has made us kings and priests to His God and Father, to Him be glory and dominion forever and ever. Amen.

HEAVENLY AUTHORITY

On July 4 Americans celebrate their independence as a nation. While the colonies formed the United States and broke away from England, they did not and really could not break away from being governed. There would be total chaos if there were not some authority to enforce and promote law and order.

Government comes from God. Romans 13:1 is clear: "Let every soul be subject to the governing authorities. For there is no authority except from God, and the authorities that exist are appointed by God." The Lord has designated representatives here on this earth. While there are many who misuse their authority, we still owe them obedience as to God Himself since they are His representatives.

The Christian recognizes first and foremost his citizenship in God's kingdom, but he also has responsibilities as a citizen of a city, state, and nation. It would be a hopeless and oppressive existence if our highest aspirations remain on earth. So then, while we mark our time here on earth being governed as citizens of our nation, we patiently wait for the day when we reach our true country in heaven where no rulers are between us and God.

We are told in Revelation 1:5-6 that Jesus Christ is the ruler over the kings of the earth "and has made us kings and priests to His God and Father." What a tremendous thought to consider! The heavenly King will exalt all those who are His.
