Amos 6:2 Go to Calneh and look at it; go from there to great Hamath, and then go down to Gath in Philistia. Are they better off than your two kingdoms? Is their land larger than yours?
A BETTER KINGDOM
Many powerful kingdoms have come and gone. When they were at the heights of their prosperity, few would have guessed that they would one day be nothing. In the days when the Roman Empire controlled nearly 2 1/2 million square miles of land, did the world think that such rule would ever be broken?
Security is not to be found in money, power, or influence. The people and nations who think they are strong because of these things need to remember the strong who have faded before them. Amos pointed Israel and Judah to Calneh (built by Nimrod and eventually ruined), Hamath (destroyed by Sennacherib), and Gath (made desolate by Hazael).
The kingdoms of the earth will fade, therefore our trust is not in them. They cannot take care of us like our God takes care of us. The kingdom that is ours through the Lord Jesus Christ cannot be shaken. "An inheritance that can never perish, spoil or fade -- kept in heaven for you" (1 Peter 1:4).
