Psalm 130:5-6 I wait for the LORD, my soul waits, and in his word I hope; my soul waits for the Lord more than watchmen for the morning, more than watchmen for the morning.
WAIT FOR THE LORD!
Watchmen standing on a city wall learned to know the meaning of the word "patience." As they would wait on the ramparts, keeping two eyes out for enemies, they were waiting with the eager expectation that morning WOULD come. Nighttime is scary, especially when attackers are a very real threat. But the watchmen KNEW, with absolute certainty, the morning WAS coming. Period. The light would flood the world once again and the city could operate in safety. There is an eager expectation to waiting for morning! You KNOW you can make it through the night, because morning WILL come. The safety of light is coming!
The safety of brilliant, morning light comes to us in the person of Jesus Christ. His glorious light shone that first Christmas, when the angels proclaimed to the shepherds, "Behold, I bring you good news of great joy that will be for all the people. For unto you is born this day in the city of David a Savior, who is Christ the Lord" (Luke 2:10-11). It was that Savior who proclaims to his disciples, "I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will not walk in darkness, but will have the light of life" (John 8:12). The glowing safety of Christ's light is all around you! It shines through the promises of salvation and eternal life found only in his Word.
Along with the psalmist, we Christians continue to practice the skill of waiting -- waiting for the Lord's deliverance. How do we wait for the LORD? We pray. We confess our sins and receive absolution. We go to the Lord’s supper with joy. We rejoice in our Redeemer. And it's with eager expectation that we continue to wait for our final deliverance. We wait for the LORD to answer our prayers and we wait for the Last Day when we will be taken to live eternally with him. What a joy to wait for the Lord!
