Next Wednesday we welcome Colin Trow-Pool FRPS FIPF MPAGB who will be presenting his print talk entitled People and Places. Colin's talk will include (mostly panels) portraits of people taken in India, Silhouettes of people, abstracts, infrared landscapes, his ARPS panel, Titanic Museum images together with a panel of old cars (plus other stuff). The talk will be a mixture of both monochrome and colour prints.
The following is taken from Colin's website:
"I am both a fellow of the Royal Photographic Society and the Irish Photographic Federation. I hold a Master at the Photographic Alliance of

Great Britain and have won numerous gold and silver medals. I am privileged to be asked to judge national photographic competitions and I’ve had my own exhibitions. I regularly lecture on the photographic clubs/society circuit and I have had images printed with accompanying articles published. An avid monochrome worker, I enjoy the simplicity it brings and I believe that by removing colour, the focus is shifted, distractions are minimized viewers impressions are altered. My goal, wherever possible, is to create drama, mood and narrative power.
Although historically a darkroom worker I’ve embraced the digital age, but in doing so have retained the merits of traditional club photography. I enjoy the tactile physicality of the print and consider that the way an image is printed can influence the meaning and the emotional values we attach to it. I believe that printing is an intimate and exquisite craft that lies at the heart of photography. As photographers we should all print our images and take the liberty of encouraging others to do the same"

I have previously mentioned the new Creative Image competition that is due to be held after the Society AGM on 3 July. On the left you can see a computer generated image of the Bob Faris Trophy that will be up for grabs on the night for the best creative image (print or PDI). The competition is to be judged by Colin Harrison FRPS FIPF FBPE MFIAP MPAGB EFIAP/d1 MPSA AWPF APAGB.
Below are the rules of the competition:
|
|
For this competition, a submitted image must have originated as a photographic image or images, produced either in camera or by post processing. All images must be original and may not incorporate elements produced by anyone else. Artwork or computer graphics generated by the entrant may be incorporated so long as the original photographic content predominates. Digital skills should be seen as the tools to compose photographic images into one new single image. The final composition will show the photographer’s artistic interpretation.
Rules
1. This is an Open competition, with no levels of entry.
2. Images may have been entered into any previous club competition and may be entered into any subsequent bi-monthly or annual competition, other than this one.
3. The Trophy winner will not be eligible to enter the next two Creative Competitions.
4. Each entrant may submit up to three images. These may be all DPI, all Print or any combination of the two.
5. The judge will select a Best DPI, a Best Print and award the trophy to one of these two.
|
I have received the following from the Print Competition Secretary, David Alderson:
There was a bumper entry for the competition this year, even with quite a number of members cannily submitting only 4 prints. After culling the no. 5s, we were still left with well over 100. In consultation with the judge, all the no. 4s have sadly been excluded too. The excluded prints will be displayed next Wednesday for your admiration and collection. Please also take the remaining prints from Round 4, to make space for the Annual display after the judging night on June 5th

As many will know, BPS is one of the two clubs representing the WCPF at the PAGB Inter-Club PDI Competition at Warwick University on 13 July, below is a copy of the PAGB flyer advertising the event. It would be really great if members could go along to show support for BPS at what is always a great day out. Click on the flyer to find out more and to purchase tickets.

We have a small number of Bristol Salon of Photography 2019 catalogues for sale. This is a chance for those BPS members who didn’t enter the salon to own a copy of the Salon Catalogue for only £2.50 each. If you would like a copy please email Mike Bigger at bookings@bristolphoto.org.uk to reserve one

Are You Looking For A Different Night Out?...........
……….Once again this year, we are running our popular Photos and Food night at Somerset Speedway. Come and photograph Motorsport in the raw, and enjoy some hospitality at the same time.
Last year we had visits from several Camera Clubs and Photographic Societies, including Wellington & District, A1 Camera Club (W-S-M), Crediton Photography Club & Frome Wessex Camera Club to name but a few. From the feedback I received from the various clubs and organisations, a great evening was had by all. Don’t take my word for it, try it for yourself, or even contact those clubs and ask what kind of evening they had.
What’s On Offer and How Does It Work?.......
……….We can offer you a table in our Clubhouse, exclusively for the use of your group. Your table will give you access to the VIP guest area, if you wish, and we will also provide you with a Mixed Platter of food, consisting of Burgers, Chicken Strips, Mozzarella bites, Onion Rings, Corn on the Cob and chips .
In addition we will take you on a pre-meeting tour of the pits and track, and explain about the sport, which is one of the most exciting motorsports around, with machines that can out accelerate a Formula 1 car from a standing start to 60mph. On top of that they have no brakes, and no gears, and race on an enclosed circuit, made up of loose shale, and all on a motorbike that weighs around 70kgs, and produces over 70bph, and often race just inches from the safety fence, whilst neck and neck with an opponent.
You don’t need to stay in the guest area, you are free to wander the public areas, and take photographs of the action (subject to some safety rules etc). There are numerous great viewpoints around the arena all of which will provide you the opportunity to capture some stunning images. All we ask is that you consider the enjoyment of the other supporters whilst doing so.
What Does It Cost and What Do You Get?.......
……..The basic cost is £18 a head for a party of 10 persons, which represents great value, when you consider the normal cost of an Adult admission is £16.00 per head (without food). If you have less than 10 persons, Please contact me for a price.
For this price your party will enjoy the following:
- Table(s) for the
exclusive use of your party
- Access to the guest area
- Mixed Food Platter
- Pre-meeting tour of the
Pits and Track (**subject to available time)
- Please note drinks are not
included, but can be purchased separately from the clubhouse bar
** Pits open to public between 6:00pm and 7:00pm
How Do You Book?......
……….For available dates (and the good light) I have also included, attached to this email, our Current Fixture list for your information. If you wish to book, or have any further questions, just contact me on the number below, or email on this or the club marketing email address (below). Whilst we can accommodate more than one group on any evening, dates will be allocated on a ‘First Come, First served’ basis, so avoid missing out and book early.

Well done to the following BPS members who have gained FIAP distinctions in the recent adjudication:
David Alderson - AFIAP
Peter Brisley - AFIAP
Steve Field - AFIAP
Jeff Hargreaves - EFIAP
Ann Mead - EFIAP/g
Barry Mead - EFIAP/d3

Salon acceptances: BPS photographers are now achieving large numbers of salon acceptances and constraints on time and space mean we can't include them all. So please only advise of awards or other milestones.
Contrary to popular belief, I do not possess psychic powers and need you to tell me if you've had successes. If you want to blow your own trumpet (or someone else's), then this is the place to do it. Please let me know and I'll include details in a future issue.

Steve Field has the following for sale:
1 hardly used {I know you've all heard that before} 72mm Hoya Pro 1 Circular Polariser. MIB.
Forgot I still had this as it went on my EFS 10-22mm which I used once and the lens went 2 years ago!!
