Subject: "Collaborative Thinking"
Randy ParkThinking is challenging enough when we do it on our own - but when we add other people, be they bosses, co-workers, or spouses - well, you better have a good idea of how to proceed. Randy Park is a professional speaker and author who studies how people think and make decisions, both individually and collectively.
In this entertaining, thought provoking, interactive session you will see why:
....
the people we learn the most from - if we let ourselves - are the people we like the least
....how to get other people to understand your viewpoint (including your spouse)
....a practical technique for pulling a group of people together so they're headed in the same direction
....why "tolerating" diversity sells it short - it should be championed
....as well as identifying aspects of your own thinking that are effective and sometimes not so effective.
You'll leave with action steps to help you make better decisions with fewer mistakes at work and at home. You will also leave with one of Randy's books or DVDs. Bring your partner, guests and your friends to this special wrap up to the ISA Hamilton Section's 2007/2008 season.
Speaker: Randy Park     -     Thinking For Results
Randy ParkRandy Park has spoken at several ISA Hamilton Annual General Meetings. He works with people and organizations to help them perceive their situations more accurately and develop effective approaches for now and the future. Randy is an expert in how people think, make decisions, and communicate.    Randy holds Bachelors and Masters degrees in Physics. He worked creating world leading technology products before his interest in thinking was sparked when he observed that even brilliant people sometimes do some not-so-brilliant things.    Randy has spoken to thousands of people across Canada, in the U.S., and in Panama and Turkey. He is the author of the book "Thinking for Results - Success Strategies" and the upcoming book "The Prediction Trap

Standards & Practices Update

ISA - Standards & PracticesISA96, Valve Actuators
A newly completed technical report, ISA-TR96.05.01-2008, Partial Stroke Testing of Automated Block Valves, addresses the applications when partial stroke testing may be useful, the various methods used for partial stroke testing, and the advantages and disadvantages of each technology.  Partial stroke testing identifies failure modes associated with the block valve actuator and a limited number of failure modes associated with the valve body or internals (e.g., valve stem damage and stem to valve connection

ISA77, Fossil Power Plant Standards
The ISA77 committee met in February to review the progress and status of its series of standards. As a result, the committee is currently seeking new members for the following three subcommittees:
1) ISA77.20.01, Fossil Power Plant Simulators,
2) ISA77.70, Instrument Piping Standard, ISA S&P April.doc
3) TR77.70.01, Tracking and Controlling Instrument Documentation in Fossil Power Plants.
If you are interested in any of these subcommittees, please contact Jennifer Crumpler, ISA Standards, jcrumpler@isa.org or 919-990-9227.

ISA5, Documentation
ANSI/ISA-5.06.01-2007, Functional Requirements Documentation for Control Software Applications, is now available from ISA.
This standard establishes functional requirements specifications for control software documentation that covers the classes of industrial automation equipment and systems consisting of distributed control systems, programmable controllers, and industrial personal computers.
It provides techniques for documenting control system software, and provides a basis for validation of run-time application software after it is developed and tested to ensure that the initial requirement specification has been met.

ISA100 Wireless Technologies Demonstrated at Conference in Chongqing, China
The ISA100 Wireless Compliance Institute demonstrated prototype ISA100.11a wireless standard-based products in the ISA100 booth at the March 2008 International Industrial Wireless Conference held in Chongqing, China.
The application demonstrated was a simple tank gauging solution, which is a use case that many users have stated as an initial deployment for wireless solutions in their plants. Two tanks were alternatively filled and emptied. This demonstrated both monitoring and control usage of the wireless technology.
The prototype ISA100.11a technologies ran on multiple radio platforms, from multiple vendors, communicating through backhaul routers to a single modbus host system. Both mesh routing and non-routing technologies were deployed proving each can operate successfully in a single wireless network.
This data viewed included the process variables (ie. traditional 4-20ma wiring), device diagnostics and configuration data (ie. existing digital fieldbuses).
