Native Plant Conservation Campaign Action Alert:  American Institute for Biological Science offers online tool to build support for historic plant science and conservation legislation.
February 27, 2017

As noted in a recent NPCC News, on February 14, 2017 Rep. Mike Quigley (D-IL) and Rep. Ileana Ros-Lehtinen (R-FL) introduced House Resolution (H.R.) 1054 - “The Botanical Sciences and Native Plant Materials Research, Restoration and Promotion Act” (aka Botany Bill).

The bill was developed by the Plant Conservation Alliance Non-Federal Cooperators Committee, the NPCC, the American Public Gardens Association, the Botanical Society of America, the Garden Club of America and others. Many NPCC Affiliates are among the 62 organizations who have endorsed this historic legislation.

The American Institute for Biological Sciences (AIBS) has released an Action Alert to build support for the bill in Congress.

The online Action Alert finds your House representative and provides a form so you can easily send them an email asking that they cosponsor H.R. 1054.

Please take a moment to ask your representatives to support the Botany Bill!  A strong number of co-sponsors from all Parties will improve the odds that the legislation is considered in a hearing—the next step of the legislative process after introduction.

Note: the bill does not address the unequal treatment of of plants under the federal Endangered Species Act.

Updates on the progress of the bill can be found on the Plant Conservation Alliance Resources page.  If you are interested in getting involved more closely in these efforts, please contact info@plantconservationalliance.org.
