It's October!
Is it just me or is this the fastest year we've ever had?
25%. That's how much of the year we have left. And i can't seem to shake the feeling that giving 100% toward this final 25% will go a long way :)

September was quite the marathon!
  • I taught my first art workshop at a Women's Retreat in Ohio. It was at a convent in the middle of nowhere. A glorious weekend off the grid.
  • I gave presentations for a few different Universities
  • I created a few new pieces of art.
  • I grew some peppers
  • I established a new LLC (more on that in the future)
  • Oh and I turned 38!!!  On my birthday, while sitting on a bench coloring in Rittenhouse Square, I saw James MacAvoy strolling by with a woman beside him and a baby on his chest! YES! True story and BEST birthday present EVER! I did not approach him however, because i did not want to be that person.
So yes, September was packed and full of surprises :)

. . . pushing back the darkness
Thank you to everyone who sent me a note in response to last month's newsletter "Pushing Back the Darkness". To be honest, i was overwhelmed by the response. So many people shared their own similar experience or asked how they could be of help. The conversations that have opened up since have been refreshing and much needed; and neighbors have been so generous is donating art supplies! Above is a piece by one of the girls - we made this the week following the shooting as a way to talk about what happened. The theme that afternoon, as you probably can guess by the image, was "A Light in the Darkness".
My neighbor, Birdie, and I recently did an interview with Germantown Info Hub to talk about Paint on the Porch and the work of transformation through art. You can listen here.

. . . cultivators
I have been thoroughly enjoying coaching artists this year and am especially looking forward to my workshop through the Folk Alliance later this month! In addition to the workshops and one-on-one sessions, I am still hosting monthly Cultivators Group Sessions via Zoom...

Creators: This Thursday I will be hosting the October Zoom call.
Group sessions are an opportunity to ask creative branding, booking, social media, and audience-building questions among a group of artists - mostly musicians and singer/songwriters.This week we'll be talking about building an audience that is not entirely dependent on social media. After Facebook and Instagram's 6-hour dissapearence on Monday, you probably get why this is necessary.

As usual, this is a free monthly video call and is capped at 8ppl. SIGN UP and bring your thoughts and questions!

. . . upcoming shows
Shows really are few and far between these days, but I am saying yes to the ones I'm excited about. Returning to two familiar local(ish) spaces this fall if you're in the general area. Certainly don't hesitate to reach out regarding house concerts or other events.

A 3-dimensional prayer...
Have you ever turned your prayers into something you could tangibly hold? A 3 dimensional prayer for Philadelphia - specifically my neighborhood. Claiming truths over lies and believing that every deep-rooted weed will be pulled and replaced with life-giving, fruit-bearing trees. This paper mache globe is a sheet from the food section of the Philadelphia Inquirer, roots, from one of my pothos plants, and Amaranth flowers from my community garden. #joymakingjoy

As usual, thank you for reading! I miss seeing your faces more often but do appreciate you all coming along for the ride on this not-so-linear path I'm on!
With love,
Joy

p.s. "Just Love" hoodies are still on sale this month!
