YOUNG IRISH ANIMATORS WIN INTERNATIONAL AWARD
Dublin - A group of talented young animators from Kilkenny have walked away with a prestigious prize at an international arts fair in Estonia.
Donacha Foley, Aodhagan Murphy, Niall Cooper, Tracy Dalton, Jake Casey, Feibhár Baldwin-Wall, Eanna Brennan, Stephen O’Connor, James McGrath and Joe Carroll won the prize for the Most Promising Young Artists earlier this week at the Experimenta! exposition in Tallinn, the European Capital of Culture 2011.
Their video entitled Stop Motion Animation was selected from more than 800 entries from 13 countries. 56 Irish artists between the ages of 14 and 19 are exhibiting their work at the triennial contemporary arts fair.
Kids’ Own an all Ireland children and youth arts organisation and publishing house based in Sligo, is the official Irish partner of Experimenta! and curator of the Irish exhibition. “Young visual artists have little opportunities to showcase their work at pre-professional level. Singers and musicians have concert performances and tours, young actors have plays, but young people involved in arts have considerably less opportunities to present their works and receive feedback. This event gives them the chance to share their talent with a global audience,“ said Orla Kenny, Creative Director of Kids’ Own.
Ms Kenny added: “The work we selected showcases the energy and spontaneity of young people. They reflect a wide variety of techniques, but the majority is in digital media – audio, video and stop motion animation. As one participant remarked, ‘Animation lets you take things that exist only in your head and give them life and motion’.”
The exposition runs until June at the Tallinn Song Festival Grounds and Maarjamäe Palace.
