Indigestion

This stomach problem is often associated with overeating and an exuberant lifestyle. Indigestion is meant a form of stomach ache that can be associated with heartburn, nausea, burping and feeling really full.

Indigestion is mainly caused by medications for pain, smoking, food with a lot of fat and alcohol. When you eat a fat meal it is likely that your stomach can not handle it. This fat food causes your stomach to produce more stomach acid. This can be so much, it will go up to your esophagus. The stomach is quite strong and won't give symptoms of heartburn, but when it gets into the esophagus than you will notice pain and acidity.

Rest, do nothing and lie down, that's the only thing you can do. It’s not a good idea to drink something because your stomach already is full. If it's really bad, you can take an antacid. After half an hour most of the food has dropped a little and you can drink a glass of water. Coffee is not good to drink because that increases the risk of gastric acid formation in your esophagus which may feel very burning.

However, when the indigestion returns in a certain regularity, it is best to consult your doctor. The same applies to particularly painful indigestion. Notify therefore a doctor immediately if an indigestion is accompanied by the following symptoms: vomiting (especially if there is blood in the vomit), weight loss, lack of appetite, traces of blood in the stool or severe abdominal pain.

Do you want to enjoy your holidays and parties but do not want a big belly and the inevitable guilt afterwards then here are five tips from nutritionists to enjoy your carefree Christmas and to get through it without abdominal pain.
  1. Begin every meal with lots of vegetables. Raw, steamed, boiled, stir-fried. Fruit gives you stomach a full feeling because of the fibers and the healthy substances in fruit stabilize your blood sugar. Therefore you feel full for a longer time and have less tendency to overeat or eat 'bad' things.
  2. Go for a dessert with fresh fruit or a cup of fresh ginger or mint tea with a piece of dark chocolate.
  3. Choose simple dishes, with not too many ingredients to prevent gas formation. Dishes swimming in fat, processed meats, simple carbohydrates (white bread, candy, cakes, stuffed meat) and too salty foods are all an attack on the digestive system causing your stomach to inflate. Simple dishes such as lean meats, grilled fish, steamed vegetables and quinoa are better options for a tummy-free Christmas.
  4. Drink as much water as you can between the meals. With fresh lemon juice. Water with lemon does wonders for your digestion and supports the liver to get rid of all the toxins that you digest in these days and makes it easier and faster to process.
  5. Move. Exercise is good. It makes you cheerful and helps to get rid of excess energy. This keeps your intestines moving and stimulates the digestion.
