Hello, Firstname

Wednesday 6 November

On Wednesday 6 November our speaker will be Jerry Webb who will be presenting his talk Mono Photography with an Edge’. This is a dip into the world of unorthodox and dramatic photography, something Jerry loves. Photography based on instinct, experimentation, close proximity and including many people and large crowds. There will be lots of contrast, wide angle lens usage, heavy blacks, tension, angles, over-exposure and some unusual framing and cropping.

Jerry’s images are, as the title of his talk indicates, all Black and White, dramatic, memorable and brilliant. He uses Nikon cameras, usually with a wide-angle lens to get what he wants. He shoots in RAW and in colour then converting to black and white in Photoshop.  Many of his pictures are taken with a very wide-angle lens from ground level, about eighteen inches from the ground, or, if taking street pictures, from waist level.

There will be images of animals, a sheep and some dogs, where the pictures were taken at their eye level and very close to them. Categories we can expect to see are Weather; Wind; Street; Looking up; Looking down; Into the light; People taken from the front; People taken from the back; Tourists; Weird; Crowds - to name but a few.

A great number of his pictures are taken in Brighton, where Jerry lives, but there will be quite a number from around the world. Jerry runs workshops in Brighton on ‘Street Photography’ and also ‘Mono Photography’.

PAGB Interclub Print Competition
Last Sunday (27 October) BPS represented the WCPF at the PAGB Interclub Print Competition at Blackburn.
We were one of the 30 clubs that represented each of the Federations in the UK who took part which meant that we were in the top 30 clubs in the UK before the day started. We finished in joint 7th place in the first round in which all 30 clubs took part. The top 8 in this round went through to the Final which, as we were in the top 8, meant that we were in the Final! BPS finished the day in a very creditable 7th place in the final, so a pat on the back for all who provided prints (see below).

Exhibitions to Visit
Tyntesfield - ONLY A FEW DAYS LEFT! National Trust. Photographic exhibition explores the links between the guano industry and Tyntesfield's wealth. Full details here - Until 4 November.

Lacock Abbey - ONLY A FEW DAYS LEFT! Until 3 November Photography exhibition at the Fox Talbot Museum by Maggie Taylor
Artist Maggie Taylor returns to Lacock this summer with Through the Looking Glass. Using her point and click camera, flatbed scanners and Photoshop, she creates digital art that transports viewers into dreamlike worlds. Inspired in part by Lewis Carroll's classic Alice in Wonderland, Taylor’s use of antique nineteenth-century photographic sources including anonymous daguerreotypes and tintypes imbues her imagery with a Victorian character appropriate to the setting of Carroll’s narrative. Discover links to Lacock Abbey through these images, on display in our Photographic gallery - free admission to the exhibition. For more details of the exhibition and Lacock, follow this link. (I've seen this exhibition and she almost manages to "out-Barry" Barry! - Ed)

Trumpet Blower's Corner
BPS members have done well in the New Zealand International Salon - Last week I omitted to mention Sue O'Connell who gained 6 acceptances including 2 ribbons. Sorry for the omission and well-done Sue!

Salon acceptances: BPS photographers are now achieving large numbers of salon acceptances and constraints on time and space mean we can't include them all. So please only advise of awards or other milestones.

Contrary to popular belief, I do not possess psychic powers and need you to tell me if you've had successes. If you want to blow your own trumpet (or someone else's), then this is the place to do it. Please let me know and I'll include details in a future issue.

Friday 6 December, 11:00am – 3:00pm   £50
Join Esther Ling as she explores the secrets of food photography when working commercially, with this Christmas edition of shooting food for advertisement. The methodology behind setting up efficient shoots has been set up over many years to ensure photographers are able to capture mouth-watering images that delight the customer and exaggerate the real product to have maximum engagement.
From potato substituted for ice cream, to painted raw turkeys, images of food have been tampered with throughout the industry for years. Esther will show you the best way to work and help you with gaining portfolio shots for when you work on the real thing and how to ensure you are prepared for working commercially at Christmas. We will have a full set up for you

Wild Arena|Macro moth photography Canon
Tuesday 10 December, 10am - 1pm OR 2pm - 5pm £30
These nocturnal creatures are a great way to learn macro-wildlife photography.
During the workshop, Wild Arena will present and demonstrate the fundamentals of macro photography and capturing stunning shots of wildlife close up.

We will cover a variety of topics including:
  • The choice & use of macro lenses
  • Keeping things in focus
  • The creative use of depth-of-field
  • Managing movement in the images with shutter speeds.
You will then have the chance to put these techniques into practice and get up close and capture these intricate insects. The moths will be displayed under photographic lighting and woodland dioramas, creating a real-world look indoors.
The sessions are ideally suited to customers using DSLR/Mirrorless cameras and we usually have some demonstration lenses available to try out on the day if you do not already own one.
With group sizes of a maximum of 12 delegates and the convenient and comfortable setting of Unit13, these days are great value for those photographers wishing to develop their skills in macro and close-up.
