Wednesday 15 May

Next week we welcome Toby Pickard to Unit 13, when he will be presenting his talk: How to Improve Your Wildlife Photography.

From the jungles of India to the mountains of British Columbia, the cliffs of Pembrokeshire to the urban streets of Bristol - Toby is a 25 year-old wildlife photographer and filmmaker who has spent the past 13 years working on his craft.
His photographs have been recognised in photography competitions both in the UK and internationally, he’s presented multiple features on national television for ITV’s Alan Titchmarsh Love Your Weekend and has spent the past three years working in the wildlife TV industry in Bristol for the BBC, National Geographic and Netflix. Join him for an evening as he presents his portfolio of work, explaining what he’s learnt along the way through both handheld and camera trap photography, and ultimately giving advice on how you too can improve your own wildlife photography.
Below are a few images from the talk. To see more of Toby's images, go to his web page by clicking here.

DI Group
The next Digital Imaging Group Meeting will be on Monday May 13 at 7.30pm.

These meetings are informal and take place at the clubhouse and via zoom, it is a great opportunity to share your work with other members or simply to gain some inspiration.

If you would like some advice, to share a project you have been working on or simply want to share some of your images outside the competition environment please send your images to dig@bristolphoto.org.uk by email or WeTransfer service by 5.00pm on Saturday 11 of May ( a day earlier than usual) so they can be included.

Please number your images in the order you would like them to be viewed and resize to the usual competition size, not essential but helps to keep the file sizes manageable.

Last month we were privileged to look at and share some diverse and interesting images from the following members:

Robin Mudge - Shared some extraordinary images and footage, taken while on a dangerous and challenging assignment to document the extreme conditions endured by those that fought to extinguish the Kuwaiti oil fires, caused by the Iraqi military following the Gulf war.

It was a unique opportunity to view some dramatic, thought-provoking footage and imagery.  Seeing was believing….

Robin produced a 16 page (maga)zine on the subject and had it printed by a company at www.mixam.co.uk for those interested.

Colin Dixon - showed a wonderful variety of images including experimental town and landscapes using multiple exposures and intentional camera movement to great effect using his camera app. Also some studio images which he had put his individual stamp on, always lots of food for thought.

Sian Jones - shared some images taken at the BPS outing to Wells organised by Mike Hall. The workshop was called the Art of Blur and Sian managed to get some great impressionistic images and shared some of the tips learned on the course.

Linda Meaton - ran through how she tackled one of her assignments as part of her British Academy of Photography course. The task was to create an album cover, she showed how each element was taken and layered to create a very successful end result. Illustrating among other things that you should never delete images even if you think they are terrible because they can make the perfect background!

Steve Bridgen - shared a variety of images he had converted into various shades of monochrome giving the images a very different feel. He also showed some imaginative images taken while on the Art of Blur workshop.

Rachel Domleo - Showed a selection of images from ice patterns to Spanish winter sun using collections of images and shared how some had been further processed to produce more creative images.

Ashwin Chauhan - shared some colourful images of Bristol highlighting the photographic riches on our doorstep.

He also introduced possible DI challenges for future meetings. The aim is to help members improve and polish their images.

One option maybe to take an image, either one of yours or one provided if you don’t feel you have anything suitable. Explore a number of options to see how it could be enhanced either by adding contrast, overlays or using it to create a more ‘creative’ image.

Details to follow, so watch this space….

Get Your Creative Juices Flowing!
Some of you may recall from the recent EGM that Ralph mentioned the fact that BPS will be hosting a new exhibition in the calendar under the banner of the BPE (British Photographic Exhibitions). It is proposed that the first date for this new exhibition will be October this year and planning is now well under way. The exhibition is to be called the Great Western Photographic Exhibition and will be run under the chairmanship of Steve Field

One of the first things that needs to be sorted is a logo and we would like this to come from the creative mind of a BPS member. To this end, we would be really pleased if you could put your creative hat on and see if you can come up with something suitable. What we need is something that is distinctive and easy to recognise and possibly contains the characters GWPE or maybe a reference to the Southwest in a similar way that the WCPF shows a map of the area. There is no set formula for this, however, so just let your imagination run wild!

The only downside to all of this is the short timescale we have available to us, so if you can come up with something, would you please email it to Steve, to reach him by Sunday 19 May:

Trumpet Blowers' Corner
Well done to BPS members who have recently done well in external competitions/exhibitions. These include Jay Hallsworth who has had successes in two BPE exhibitions: Neath & District UK Salon - 7 acceptances and Rushden Open with 8 acceptances. Not content with that, he has also had 2 images accepted in the London Salon.

Three proud BPS members were among the award winners at the opening of the WCPF Members Exhibition last Saturday: Rachel Dolmeo (with a trophy so large it needed a seat of its own!), Sue O’Connell and Richard Kay. Altogether Bristol put on a really impressive show with 16 members achieving a total of 76 acceptances including 18 awards! Well done everyone! (Full BPS results were in Issue 577 of the Newsletter).

Salon acceptances: Contrary to popular belief, I do not possess psychic powers and need you to tell me if you've had successes. If you want to blow your own trumpet (or someone else's), then this is the place to do it. Please let me know and I'll include details in a future issue.
