Our first speaker of 2025 is Phil Cooling FRPS who will be presenting his talk called Weird & Wonderful ...ish. This is the talk he was scheduled to give back in August but was postponed owing to the small matter of a bit of civil unrest in the centre of town. Phil says the following about himself and the talk:
"I first picked up a digital camera in 2008 and my first competition entries were dreadful (I will share some of these with you). I quickly got over this phase and began to win competitions at home and abroad. I attained my A.R.P.S. in 2010 (Natural History) and my Fellowship in 2014 (Visual Art).
My presentation, called "Weird & Wonderful...ish" takes you along my journey from taking anything and everything to specialising in creative composites."

Below are a couple of images from the talk which should give you an idea of what to expect. To see more of Phil's work, visit his website: https://philcooling.zenfolio.com/ |

DI Practical meeting – 13 January in the clubroom (no Zoom)
Join us in the clubroom for a practical demo of macro photography. Mike Hall will be showing the camera equipment automatically taking several images moving in small steps and combining all those images in focus stacking software to get full depth of field over the subject. Mike Martin will demonstrate similar but all done in-camera using an Olympus camera. As usual these meetings are informal and you will have plenty of opportunity to chat to others present at any time or over the coffee & biscuits break. If you use any other system of focus stacking, please do bring it along and show how you use it and share your experience.
The next Digital Imaging Group meeting will be on 10 February in the clubroom and on Zoom
Many thanks to all those who have contributed in the past twelve months and helped to make these evenings such a success. I look forward to seeing lots of new images and projects in the coming year.

Millie Spaven 1938-2024
To those of you who knew Millie Spaven, I have to pass on the sad news that she died on 23 November. After trying to reach her for several days, we were eventually able to contact her daughter, who told us that Millie had had a stroke on 17 November and sadly died after a short stay in hospital.
Millie joined BPS in 2002 along with her husband Alan, who died in 2015. She ran the Photo Course from 2008 until 2014, was Deputy Chairman from 2012-14 and then Chairman from 2014-16. In addition she took a very active part in helping to run the Bristol Salon for many years and who can forget the annual "post Salon" bean feasts at her house (under the pretence of being a Salon review meeting!). Unfortunately, poor health kept her away from BPS in more recent times, but she still maintained a keen interest in its activities.
|
|
The funeral will be on 9 January, when, unfortunately, Carol and I will be away. Full details:
South Bristol Crematorium on Thursday 9 January at 2:15pm.
All are welcome at the funeral and at Millie's house afterwards: 1, The Paddock, Clevedon, BS21 6JU
To help Millie's daughter, Wendy, with catering, would you please let her know if you will be going to The Paddock: wendylagden@hotmail.co.uk

Bristol Salon 2025
Closing - 31 January
3 PDI Sections:
Open Colour
Monochrome
Nature
3 Print Sections:
Open Colour
Monochrome
Nature
Entry is free to BPS members*
* Not available to distance members, temporary members or photography course members.
|
Very few members have entered the 2025 Bristol Salon - just a measly two at the last count! It is open to all members and is your chance to have a go at one of the most important international photographic exhibitions, and it's FREE! *
Entrants may submit up to 12 projected images and 12 prints across the three sections (Open, Monochrome & Nature) in each category. These will be put before a panel of selectors who will pick the top 25% or so to be accepted. Entry for BPS members is free*.
For those entering prints these will be returned via Unit 13.
When entering your prints you have the choice of
- Hold
for collection
- Return
by mail
- Forward
to the Midland Salon (at no cost)
- Destroy
If you are not forwarding to the Midland, then please mark your choice as ‘Hold for Collection’. We can see this on the label attached to your print, and it makes them more easily identifiable.
If you mark them as Destroy, although we will look out for BPS prints there is always a chance they will be missed, and you will not get your prints back.
This is your chance to dip your toes in the murky world of international exhibitions without having to open your wallets! So, come on, get off your BTMs and let's see a load of BPS entries. In the meantime if you have any queries, feel free to email Ralph at chairman@bristolsalon.co.uk
The closing date is 31 January.
For those of you who aren't too sure what the Bristol Salon is: it is an international photographic exhibition that has been running since 1947 and is the largest exhibition of its type in the UK attracting entries from across the world.

Well done to Derwood Pamphilon who has had a print (Pink Skirt) accepted in the 8th Masters of Print exhibition. This is no mean feat as only 60 prints are accepted from entries submitted from across the whole of the UK. The print is shown below:
|
Salon acceptances: Contrary to popular belief, I do not possess psychic powers and need you to tell me if you've had successes. If you want to blow your own trumpet (or someone else's), then this is the place to do it. Please let me know and I'll include details in a future issue.
|
If you have any photographic items
for sale, drop me a line and I'll include it in the next newsletter.
Please make sure that you provide contact details, price and full
description of the sale items (pictures always help).
|
IMPORTANT: Personal Detail Changes |
Please don't forget that if you change your
address (home or email), or gain additional photographic distinctions,
it would be appreciated if you could let the Membership Secretary know
so that she can keep her records up to date, this will also ensure that
you continue to receive your newsletters - please email all changes to membership@bristolphoto.org.uk.
The distinctions we have on record are those
shown at the top of this newsletter, please remember, if you don't tell
us we can't possibly know!
DO NOT REPLY TO THE NEWSLETTER. |
