Hello Firstname
DPIC VICTORY FOR BPS

BPS won the WCPF DPIC Competition for clubs in the Southwest region at Exeter on Sunday 10 February. 49 clubs entered with each submitting 20 images which meant a long day for the eight club members who travelled to Exeter, but it was worth sitting through nearly 1000 images to hear the WCPF President, Eddy Lane, announce at the end of the day that the worthy victors were Bristol Photographic Society. Not content with winning the competition, four members distinguished themselves by winning individual awards: Certificates of Merit were awarded to John Chamberlin (2), Peter Smith and Barry Mead, but the top award of the day was reserved for Val Duncan who won a PAGB Gold Medal for the best image in the competition with her picture "At the Ballet". Well done to all who provided images and especially to these four.

Order For Print Mount Board
Keith Wood is hoping to be able to put together an order for packs of print mount board. The board is  A0 sized (1189mm x 841mm - 46.8" x 33.1") which you will need to cut yourself, it is white cored and in either Smooth White of Antique White finish. Order quantities in packs of 10 only (no part packs, but several members could get together to make up pack quantities) - you can get 4 x 50cm x 40cm mount boards from 1 sheet.
The cost is £38 per 10 pack
If you would like to order some of these, then please fill in your details & requirements on the form which is on the notice board at the back of the clubrooms by the close of next Wednesday's meeting (20 Feb); however I'm sure that if you can't get to Wednesay's meeting Keith won't mind you emailing him by the same deadline - click here to send Keith an email. Even "Wood's Bank" isn't large enough to fund this, so you'll need to get your payment to Keith by 21 Feb, either cash or cheque (Payable to K R Wood)

Photo Travel Photography
Photo Travel is becoming an increasingly popular section in international exhibitions and yet many entrants don't really have a clue what constitutes a Photo Travel image. This is evident by the many images we receive in the Bristol Salon which are nothing more than images taken on holiday, with many of them having been heavily manipulated in Photoshop (other photo editing software is available). What constitutes a Photo Travel image is, in fact, constrained by a fairly rigid definition issued by the Photographic Society of America which is reproduced below:

A Photo Travel image must express the feeling of a time and place, and portray a land, its distinctive features or culture in its natural state. There are no geographical limitations. Closeup pictures of people or objects must include distinguishable environment. Techniques that add to, relocate, replace or remove any element of the original image, except by cropping, are not permitted. All adjustments must appear natural. Conversion to full monochrome is acceptable. Derivations, including infrared, are unacceptable.

Mary Ellen Brooker FPSA, a past director of the Photo Travel Division of the PSA has written an article in the latest issue of the PSA Journal. This should be essential reading for all would-be Photo Travel entrants; you can download the article by clicking on this link

PSA Creative Interclub Competition
We have received the following email from the PSA Creative Interclub Competition organiser, Tom Peterson:

The images from the AMs and HMs from the December competition are now up on the PSA site. Here's the link.

I'd like everyone to take a look at the images to see what placed high during the competition.  If your club didn't do well, you might want to have the "creative" types in your club take a look to see what they might do that would get them higher scores.

I had a couple people send me notes about the December competition.  The rep from one of the host clubs said the club members didn't think the set of images in the Group they had judged were particularly good examples of "creative" images.  I looked after the scores were all in and I have to agree that many of the images were borderline "creative".  Just changing the color density or making slight changes to what might be considered a nature image really doesn't do well on the creative side of things.  Adding a "stock" Photoshop filter or flipping something using Polar Coordinates won't float any boats either.  HDR was probably considered "creative" five years ago, but HDR has become so "mainstream" now days that the general instructions sent out at the beginning of the season specifically mentions that HDR "only" images are not thought of as "Creative" at this time.

Again.  Please look at the award winners and see how "Creative" some of our clubs can be.

Thanks

Tom Peterson
