In the communal Riverside studio at Re:Centre, Hammersmith, nine London based artists have embraced the concept of ‘play’ through their art.
This is the second three month residency commissioned by ReCentre’s art initiative and culminates in a two week long exhibition titled ‘PLEI’ at Re:Centre’s 4000 square feet event space.
Exhibiting artist Kate Lowe says: In a world that is saturated with technology, purposefulness, stress and responsibilities, people seldom make time for play.
Playing through art has allowed us to make, unmake and remake our world. Both play and art are generative and we hope that you will experience some of the power of PLEI as you encounter the work.
The artists practices are diverse; they make work across many media and channels including video, figurative painting, sound, collage, mixed media, abstract
expression, photography, drawing, fabric, sculpture and installation.
Reconnecting to their instinct to experiment, fool around, make mistakes, make a mess, become confused, feel awkward, be silly, be non-purposeful (on purpose), be self-directed and indulge in pretending has allowed all 9 artists to explore the role of play through art.
‘Plei’ opens with a private view on 24th Juanuary 6.30 - 8.30 pm at Re:Centre.
Following the private view the exhibition is open to the pubic (admission free) 11 am - 5 pm daily until 5th February.

RE:CENTRE
Re:Centre is a new concept opening on the Thames Path where visitors can find a sanctuary of rest and reflection – a space to connect to ourselves and others in an authentic and balanced way. In this fast-paced and action-oriented world, it is here we are able to find a connection to ourselves, and to our innate inner creative flow. The space will comprise a main event space, a rentable workshop space, an artist programme, a café, yoga studio, treatment rooms and a rest area.
