Hello West Portalians!
This Thursday, we are welcoming one of our own. Well, two of our own, actually. Ethel Rohan has been a friend of this bookstore for years. She and her family shop here, and they’re just extremely nice people. The same can be said of Lori Ostlund, author of After the Parade, who will be joining Ethel in conversation on Thursday, February 23rd at 7:00pm.
I think Ethel is poised to breakout in a big way. She’s published two story collections previously, and just last week it was announced that she’s longlisted for the prestigious Sunday Times EFG Short Story Award. The Weight of Him is her debut novel, and it’s going to move and inspire a lot of readers. I am one of them! I wrote the following about it:
Billy Brennan had problems even before his eldest son killed himself. Happy and functional men do not balloon up to 400 pounds. Now, in the immediate wake of Michael’s suicide, Billy and the entire family are floundering. Desperate to save other families this grief, and maybe save his own in the process, Billy pledges to lose half his body weight for the cause of suicide prevention. As he begins to see success, his goals escalate—but at what cost to those around him? Debut novelist Ethel Rohan has a real feel for human nature and a seemingly endless well of empathy for her characters. The good news is that the novel opens at rock bottom for this family. While there is pain along the way, there is great healing. Billy Brennan has a long road ahead of him, but I think you’ll find it’s a journey worth accompanying him on.
