Next Wednesday, 9 April, we will be having a meeting across the airwaves, when we host Alison Mees ARPS, CPAGB, who will be giving her talk Living the African Dream via the wonders of Zoom.
Alison was born in the UK, and from an early age had a passion for wildlife and photography. She had a strong desire to be in Africa from a child. In 2004 she arrived in South Luangwa, Zambia undertaking various jobs including reservations, marketing and hosting and having the opportunity to follow her passion in wildlife photography and working with the local people of Mfuwe with community and conservation projects. Alison's dream came true when she became a qualified driving guide in South Luangwa. Alison set up a community project with some of the people in Mfuwe making elephant dung paper, using the photos she has taken making them into cards. During her time in South Luangwa she met Tom, where they got married in an Ebony Grove. Alison was in Zambia for 8 years before moving on.

Alison spent 4 years working in the Serengeti, Tanzania. Her passion for wildlife and photography keeps growing, spending time with Serengeti Cheetah Project learning about individual cheetahs.
In June 2017 she moved to Mara North Conservancy, Kenya to manage a camp with Tom. Alison has the opportunity to continue her own cheetah observations and studies, working with the Local Maasai Community with various projects. Still finding time to continue with her passion for photography.
Due to the pandemic Alison returned to the UK in March 2020. Her love and dedication of cheetahs continues and since April 2020 she has been a volunteer at CCF UK - Cheetah Conservation Fund. Spending time fund raising and delivery of workshops showing her photographs and raising awareness of how endangered the cheetahs are in the Wild.
During her on-line talks she was asked about running trips to Africa. Once we could start travelling again, Alison set up her own small group photographic trips. Returning to Kenya and some of the best wildlife destinations. Alison shares her knowledge of the wildlife, locations, photographic tips and ensuring you return home with 1000s of photos and memories.
Alison gained her ARPS in 2021.
Living The African Dream - takes you on a journey with Alison to Tanzania & Kenya, where she will tell her story with some of the wildlife, camp life and wildlife photos and how she took some of them.
Below are some examples of Alison's work, t o read more about Alison and to see more of her images, visit her website www.alisonmeesphotography.com |

Projected Image Competition - Round 4 |
The next Digital Imaging Group Meeting will be on Monday 14 April at 7.30pm.
Meetings are informal and take place at the clubrooms and via zoom.
We have something a little different lined up for the April meeting.
If last month’s practical session whetted your appetite for still life photography don’t miss the April DI Group as Simon Caplan’s presentation will be covering this very subject, looking at some of the basic concepts that contribute to a successful still life including,
- What is still life?
- Getting Started
- “Rules” (or not) of Composition
- Examples of his and other photographers/Artists work
- Questions/Discussion
After the break Colin Dixon will be demonstrating his approach to creative editing with some completed examples. To round off the evening we have a presentation from Sue Swift.
We were treated to a wide variety of images and an AV at the February meeting, see below a snapshot of what we enjoyed, many thanks to all those that contributed and made it such an enjoyable evening.
If you have a more detailed topic / technique to share, then let me know and we can schedule a longer more focused session, or feature this on one of the intervening practical evenings.
I look forward to seeing you.
Rachel Domleo.

We need to start thinking about our entry in the Kingswood Salver (5 images from separate authors) presented as a panel). One idea is that we might look at people with different headwear / covering. So for this Monday (7 April) please bring hats, scarves, shawls, etc so we can take photos of each other and see if we can put together a panel – we want to win again!

Rob Stephenson has sent me details of a film at the Watershed until 10 April. It is called "Two Strangers Trying Not To Kill Each Other" and explores the complicated yet creatively rich relationship between Bronx-born photographer Joel Meyerowitz and British artist Maggie Barrett.

Photo|Frome returns in April 2025 with the theme ‘inEquality’.
Through photography from internationally acclaimed, national and regional artists, we reflect on stories of global and local justice and equality. Running from 5 April – 27 April, the festival team are following two successful editions with their most ambitious event yet.
- The third edition of the festival includes 13 free exhibitions (indoor and outdoor), talks, workshops, portfolio reviews, pop-up portrait studio (Faces of Frome), curator tours and more.
- Susan Meiselas, recipient of the Outstanding Contribution to Photography of the Sony World Photography Awards 2025, will be showing her signature colour reportage work from Nicaragua.
- Photo|Frome will again offer an international Open Photobook Award and the MPB Student Awards. In 2025, we will also have a new Open Call on the inEquality theme.
Rook Lane Chapel, the festival’s central venue, features Joss Barratt’s photography taken whilst working on set with acclaimed director Ken Loach alongside documentary photographers independently working on similar issues as the films. there are major themes drawn from Loach’s films: colonialism and resistance, living conditions and the human spirt, refugees and the welfare state. The “constructed reality” film stills aim to start a conversation with photographers who have covered the same themes in their own way. This includes documentary photography by Susan Meiselas, Nick Hedges, Tish Murtha, Jim Brogden and Roland Ramanan, conceptual work by Paul Seawright and interpretive work by Fast Forward: Women in Photography curated by Anna Fox
Further exhibitions take different approaches to the theme. This includes Joanne Coates whose work explores rurality, hidden histories, and income-based inequalities, Valentina Sinis’ ‘Were Afghan Women to Unveil their tales‘, Sujata Setia’s ‘A Thousand Cuts’, Sarah Palmer’s ‘Wish You Were Here’, Evgeniya Strygina’s ‘Home from Home’ and Tim Smith’s ‘In The World But Not Of It’. Students from Falmouth University, Boomsatsuma, Bristol and Frome College will also be exhibiting, as will the local collective Frome Wessex Photographic.

AWPF Distinction Applications Invited
The Welsh Photographic Federation is delighted to invite applications for the 2025 Associate of the Welsh Photographic Federation (AWPF) distinction.
This prestigious award is open to a maximum of 25 applicants annually and welcomes photographers from around the world.
Achieving the AWPF requires submitting a cohesive panel of 12 images that will be assessed by five highly regarded, experienced photographers. See an example of a successful panel below.
The WPF is one of the few Federations within the PAGB to offer this highly sought-after distinction. Successful candidates earn the lifelong privilege of using the letters AWPF after their name, a testament to their photographic excellence.
The workshop is on May 17th at Cynon Valley Museum 10 am – 4pm and the assessment will be held on the 16th November at Talbot Green Community Centre.
For more information, please visit the WPF website:
