Dr. Mathern teaches several undergraduate courses in the Interdepartmental Program for Neuroscience; teaches neurosurgery residents, and basic scientists; and mentors several pre-doctoral, post-doctoral and medical students in his laboratory. Dr. Mathern is regularly invited to lecture at national and international meetings.
He is very active in service at the university level; similarly, he is on the editorial boards of several major subspecialty journals and regularly serves as ad hoc reviewer for the NIH and international research granting agencies.
He has also been very active and, in fact, developed and directed several non-profit organizations devoted to educating the public about this treatable disease and reducing the stigma of epilepsy.
The criteria set forth for this Chair include excellent clinical skills, provision of compassionate patient care, active scientific research in epilepsy, and a commitment to teaching both at UCLA and in the community about epilepsy.
