Hello Firstname

Wednesday 22 November
Next Wednesday we welcome to BPS, Bob Bishop LRPS EFIAP BPE3* who will be presenting his talk called Have Camera Will Travel. Bob says of his talk:
"I have been in and out of photography since I was a teenager, being restricted by work and family commitments as the years went by.
My Photography was totally reignited when I retired just after the start of this century. Suddenly I had the time to progress my hobby a bit more seriously. Landscape photography has always been my first love, but now I also enjoy event photography, people, street and travel.

The talk will include a mixture of all these and the travel aspect will include a trip to Burma, in particular its people. So, from the often busy scene with event photography, to the comparative serenity at silly o`clock in a landscape and the

other genres in between, I have considerable variety in what I love to photograph. Each have their challenges which keeps me on my toes!
The images I show will be a mixture of mono and colour and time will be spent on one or two images here and there to explain how I arrived at the final image. I will also display prints of some of the images in the talk."
Above is one of Bob's pictures that we'll see on the evening. Below is an image that Bob describes as a "grab shot" - all will be revealed on the night!

Happy 90th Birthday
Next week, Jim Marsden joins that very exclusive group within BPS - The Nonagenarians. To mark the occasion, there will be a celebration of the event during the interval at next Wednesday's meeting, with a few special refreshments.
May I take this opportunity, on behalf of all at BPS, to offer Jim our heartfelt congratulations and best wishes at having reached this major milestone - Happy Birthday, Jim

Print Competition - Round 2
Next week is also the closing date for Print Competition Round 2. The prescribed category for your third print this time is Work, although this is a word that is alien to some of you, I'm sure that you can add your own spin to the subject. Full details of entry rules on pages 24 onwards in your Members' handbook, but if you have any queries, I'm sure that the Competition Secretary, David Alderson, will be able to answer them for you, his email address is: printcompetitions@bristolphoto.org.uk
The judge for this round is Eddy Lane ARPS DPAGB EFIAP from Calne

Studio Group
The next studio meeting will be the first of the new style of meetings aimed at members who are advanced photographers who are familiar with the studio and have attended a previous studio group meeting. Members have requested this type of meeting so that there will be more time to create individual images than during the group sessions.
There will be a series of 1 hour sessions available during the day, in this case Monday 4th December which can be booked by one or two members, the cost of each session will be £25. Nick will have set up the studio as per the studio manual and the plan is that the photographers will adjust the lighting setup and background etc. to get the images they want. For the first session the model will be Sophie, a dancer who will bring a wide range of dance costumes, so each session can be different. Nick will be present during each session and will available to help as required.
The cost of each session will be £25 and members are asked to arrive promptly no more than 10 minutes before their session.
To book a session on Monday 4th December, please click here, only 1 member can book each session and if you are going to share a session with another photographer please add this in the comments section either at the time of booking or later, please also leave a phone number in the comment section so Nick can contact you in the event of any problems.

Parking
Following on from last week's notice asking members not to park in front of Unit5 on a Wednesday evening, we will be approaching all the tenants/occupiers of the estate to get an update on where we can and cannot park. This is necessary because occupiers of the units do change, with several having moved out and new ones replacing them since we moved in. I will publish a revised parking plan as soon as this has been done.

Beyond The Wall Group
The next couple of meetings of BTW Group will be on:

4 December in the club studio, when Mark Gilbert will continue his series of lighting presentations, this time concentrating on using Speedlites.

22 January, Pete McCloskey will host an evening based on improving your prints before they are entered into the club's Print Competitions. Each BTW member will be able to have 2/3 prints analysed by Pete, whose constructive comments will help you produce better prints.

Both meetings commence at 7.30pm

If you require further information, please contact the BTW group leader, David Grierson - email .

Bristol Salon of Photography
Now is the time send in your entry to the 2018 Bristol Salon and give yourself the chance of some glory on the international photography scene.

For those of you who aren't too sure what the Bristol Salon is: it is an international photographic exhibition that has been running since the mid 1940s and is the largest exhibition of its type in the UK attracting entries from nearly 70 different countries. Entrants submit up to 16 images across 4 sections (Open, Monochrome, Photo Travel and Nature) which are put before a panel of selectors who pick the top 20% to 30% or so to be accepted. Entry for BPS members is free as long as we receive your entry before 20 January, after that you will have to pay the full fee. This might seem like a long way off, but with Christmas and the New Year coming up you'll soon find that the closing date is upon you, so beat the rush and get your entry in now!

To help you with your entry there is a small tutorial that can be downloaded by following this link. When entering, be sure to tick the box on the first page of the entry system to say that you are a BPS member and fill in your BPS membership number which you will find at the top of this newsletter; when you get to the payment page at the end, click ALREADY PAID.

Here's hoping that we see a rush of entries, but in the meantime if you have any queries, feel free to email me at chairman@bristolsalon.co.uk

PSA Interclub Travel Competition
BPS enter the DPIC and the GB Cup competitions with pictures selected from the HCs and awards from our internal competitions, however we also enter an inter-club competition organised by our member Greg Duncan on behalf of the PSA, (Photographic Society of America). The problem is that we do not have enough Travel pictures getting awards in our competitions for us to make up an entry.
Travel pictures should depict a way of life or a time and place. If members have any good suitable pictures, could they let our External Competitions Secretary, Pete McCloskey, have copies for our image bank.
Please e-mail to pmccloskey11@btinternet.com in the format of our competitions. If you have any questions regarding this, I'm sure that Pete will be only too pleased to answer them.

Chairs
Would members who are using the clubrooms or studio please note that when replacing the chairs, the chairs should be:
  • In rows of 12 (6 either side of the central walkway).
  • 5 Rows of black at the front.
  • The remaining rows using the red chairs.
  • Chairs are kept within the darker blue floor tiles.
  • A walkway should be maintained between the side walls and the seating and also between the computer desk and that back row of seats. This is to facilitate easier exit in the case of an emergency.
  • There is a sack truck in the cupboard under the stairs to make moving the stacks of chairs easier.

17 Feb
Friday 17 November, Kingswood PS welcome Christine Widdall  MPAGB, EFIAP, FBPE who will be giving an illustrated talk entitled Portfolio. Christine is a photographer based in the North West of England and many of her photographs are made around the lovely area of Saddleworth, especially its hills and waterways.
Christine’s aim is to try to capture places, people and moments in time and make them as beautiful and interesting as possible. Some are ‘competition’ pictures, others just an expression of her enjoyment of a day, an area or a subject.
Initially a hobby, photography has now become a major part of her life, as an exhibitor and judge and in 2011 she was accepted as one of 20 lecturers in the UK who are supported by PermaJet. For further information about Christine, visit her website
Kingswood PS meet Fridays from 7.30pm to around 9.30pm at St Barnabas Church Hall, Warmley, Bristol BS30 5JJ.  Visitors are most welcome and the cost for this evening is £3.00.

Hanham Photographic Society are holding their annual exhibition on 25 November at Hanham Methodist Church. The exhibition is open from 10am to 3.30pm in the main church. 3 & 4 Feb

The Fotospeed Academy is holding a workshop at the BPS clubrooms in February to help those who are looking to go for distinctions with the likes of RPS, FIAP, PAGB, BPA and more. The course is being run by ‘The Welsh Dragon’, AKA Margaret Salisbury. Margaret will display examples of successful and also unsuccessful panels, to highlight their strengths and weaknesses. She will offer guidance to participants looking for Distinctions or running Open/International Exhibitions, and use her own experience to encourage and assist you.
She will also explain the up to date criteria for the different associations and John Herlinger from The Fine Art Print room will also be on hand to share his knowledge on the best ways to present your work for panels. Finally, you will be asked to bring your own work with you which will be displayed and reviewed by other members in the class. BPS already runs its own print mentoring evenings, but this could well be a useful addition to those evenings. The dates are 3 & 4 February (two courses). Full details can be found by following this link.

ITS NOT PARTICULARLY EASY FINDING "DATES FOR YOUR DIARY", SO I WOULD REALLY APPRECIATE IT IF MEMBERS COULD LET ME KNOW OF ANY EVENTS, EXHIBITIONS OR PICTURE LOCATIONS THAT THEY THINK WOULD BE OF INTEREST. DATES AND WEB LINKS WOULD HELP

Trumpet Blowers' Corner
Salon acceptances: BPS photographers are now achieving large numbers of salon acceptances and constraints on time and space mean we can't include them all. So please only advise of awards or other milestones.

Contrary to popular belief, I do not possess psychic powers and need you to tell me if you've had successes. If you want to blow your own trumpet (or someone else's), then this is the place to do it. Please let me know and I'll include details in a future issue.

Studio Bookings
Would all members please note: before you plan your shoot and book your model, you should check whether the studio/clubroom will be free. This can be done easily and at any time by viewing the Clubroom Bookings calendar in the Members' Area of the BPS Website. Bookings can (and must) be made by contacting Mike Bigger at bookings@bristolphoto.org.uk.
Log in details to the Members' Area are at the end of this newsletter.

Items For Sale
In this section works two weeks ago Jason Eastham advertised his Canon camera for sale and within 24 hours of it appearing in print he had received 6 enquiries, and it sold - so if you have something to sell THIS IS THE PLACE TO DO IT!
If you have something photographic that you want to sell, let me have the details and I will circulate them to a captive audience of photographers through the Newsletter - send to the usual address.

Photographic Acronyms
For those of you who aren't sure what MPAGB, EFIAP/s and many more such seemingly random collections of letters mean, just click here to download the list.

Personal Detail Changes

The distinctions we have on record are those shown at the top of this newsletter, if they are wrong, please let Carol know.
