L.A. Works began organizing Days of Service events in 1991 to give companies a civic opportunity to impact their community. Since then hundreds of businesses have helped mobilize tens of thousands of volunteers to make a difference in Los Angeles.

Companies choose to get involved for a variety of reasons:
* building their brand with the public;
* enhancing corporate culture, boosting team-work, and productivity through improved employee morale; and
* showing support for improving lives in local communities.

To learn more about corporate fiscal sponsorship opportunities for L.A. Works Day 2012, please email L.A. Works Executive Director, Debbie Brutchey.
This July, more than 1,500 community and corporate volunteers will make a lasting contribution to the public safety and well-being of more than 4 million Angelenos by joining forces with the Los Angeles Fire Department in a historic service event. As an expression of thanks for their service, L.A. Works volunteers will transform the LAFD’s recently purchased Frank Hotchkin Memorial Training Center into a space that these local heroes can call home.

The day will also include our second annual Service Crawl event as well as fire trucks drills, food, music, and interesting and educational safety workshops. Follow us on Twitter and become a Facebook fan to learn more!

The Fruits of Their Labor
During the week of Cesar Chavez's birthday this March, community volunteers came together for unique fruitanthropy projects to honor Chavez’s life and legacy. The volunteers harvested the excess fruits at private properties, donating 100% to the Downtown Women's Center. After spending a few hours picking during the March 30 Alhambra area event, the volunteers came together for an in-depth discussion focused on the problematic food system that supplies the food we eat. L.A. Works partnered with the grassroots nonprofit organization, Food Forward for the week of Cesar Chavez events. Check out some of the photos from this event, HERE>>>

Community Day and Commemoration
To commemorate the 20th anniversary of the community response to the conditions that led to the Los Angeles Civil Unrest of 1992, L.A. Works will be partnering with the South Los Angeles nonprofit organizations Community Build and Community Services Unlimited to continue our joint work to transform a vacant lot that was the site of a corner store which was destroyed during the riots. If you are interested in fiscal sponsorship opportunities, please email us. To sign up as an individual volunteer, MORE>>>

Earth Day(s) of Service 2012
More than 1 billion people participate in Earth Day activities each year, making it the largest civic observance in the world. From changing out light bulbs to eating local, every Act of Green helps reduce our footprint on the planet. This April, L.A. Works will be joining the movement once again as we organize a week of civic engagement opportunities for corporate and community members to celebrate Earth Day. Corporate sponsorship opportunities for businesses to contribute a fiscal donation to mobilize their employees to volunteer are currently available. Please email us to request more information on corporate sponsorship opportunities. To sign up as a general volunteer, click MORE>>>

  Let's Get Prepared, LA
Whenever there is a natural or man-made disaster, the outpouring of support from the community is tremendous. As you know, one of L.A. Works programs is our Emergency Readiness Program to assist the Los Angeles Community in mobilizing and managing spontaneous volunteers during a disaster. We’re not talking about first-response type support, rather the volunteers who package and distribute food or clothing, support nonprofits who are addressing the needs those most affected in the disaster, and more. We need your help to plan for L.A. Works’ role in a disaster and help lead the volunteers if time should ever come. Want to join the conversation? MORE>>>

Larry's L.A. Works Story: From Volunteer Extraordinaire to Tech Guru
For more than 18 years, Larry Deckel has been an integral member of the L.A. Works family, playing a variety of roles and lending his expertise with gusto. Although we are ending our formal relationship with Larry this year as our technical support guru, we will always consider him a part of the L.A. Works family.

“Every successful organization has a small nucleus of individuals whose sheer energy helps it transcends day-to-day challenges. For LA Works, Larry is one of those people. I will always fondly recall Larry in his safari hunter’s vest; megaphone in one hand and clipboard in the other, barking out team instructions on LA Works Day. We are going to miss Larry’s passion and expertise.  He’s been a great source of glue throughout the years for many of our volunteers and staff.”  LA Works Co-founder and Board Chair Bob L.  Johnson MORE>>>

Northrop Sponsors Earth Day Project
Members of Northrop Grumman’s Aerospace Systems greeNG Corps will be volunteering as a part of L.A. Works’ Earth Day celebrations on April 27 at Carnegie Middle School. Volunteers will create new gardening plots, remove weeds and brush, and add new plants. School gardens offer hands-on, experiential learning opportunities in a wide array of disciplines, including the natural and social sciences, math, language arts, visual arts, and nutrition. Additionally, school gardening offers children opportunities for outdoor exercise while teaching them a useful skill.

Spring Quarter Leader Social
