The Lion's Roar
St. Mark's Episcopal Church, Chenango Bridge, NY
September 2015

From the Church Guy
Let's keep our summer mood a little longer.

Summers go too fast, don't they?  People are a little more relaxed in summertime than the rest of the year.  Well, Labor Day is late this year, falling on September 7.  So I think we should use that calendrical situation to extend our feeling of summer longer.

Sure, events start to pick up in September.  Our Sunday school will re-start, as will Youth Group.  Our adult choir will sing for us at 10:00 services again, and we'll gather at St. Mark's Table.

But there's no reason we can't keep our summer mood through the month of September.  My daughter once rebuked me when she saw I was stressed out.  She said, "Daddy, let it go.  Go with the flow."  Good advice, Marie!

So let's remember that each day is the day the Lord has made, and we will rejoice and be glad in it!

St. Mark's still likes to feed people!
Once a month, we provide the food and the serving team for the Canteen, the hot meal outreach program hosted by Trinity Church in Binghamton.  Our next assignment is September 27, and maybe you could sign up to help.  On that Sunday, you can attend the 8:00 service, and then arrive at Trinity at 11 a.m. with the food you'll be assigned to bring (Mary Taylor makes calls during the week before).  You will work to prepare the food, and then serve it at noon.  It's meaningful, and it makes a difference.  It's the St. Mark's thing to do!

St. Mark's still likes to eat together!
Come to the St. Mark's Table on Tuesday, September 15 at 6:00 p.m.  It's a potluck, and we ask you to bring a dish to share, as well as your own place setting.  We eat together, we sing together, and we have a simple Eucharist together.  The evening is relaxed, informal, enjoyable, and is from 6:00 until 7:30 p.m.  Come and enjoy!

A New Year of Church School Begins
Is it just me or has this summer flown by?  Another academic year is soon to start and with it also comes the beginning of another Church school year.  We will start the year off with our usual 'welcome back' get-together on September 20. The first day of classes will be on September 27.

I am pleased to tell you that all of last year's teachers will be returning to  work with our children for another year!  Thank you Karen King, Richelle Abbey, Mandy Black, Mark Phelps, Shanna Laroussi, Janee Valenzuela, Kate Abbey, Arden Meier, Heather O'Connor and Chris Sweet.

We will have a teacher's meeting after the second service on September 13.

WANTED: SINGERS
'In choir' within
Group Singing releases oxytocin, a chemical that manages anxiety and stress and enhances feelings of trust and bonding.

Come bond with the trustworthy souls of St. Mark's Epsicopal Choir; studies have shown how the brain and body respond to music while singing in groups.  No matter where you may fall on the voice 'stinkage' scale---SING!!!

Choir rehearsal officially begins September 13, following the 10:00 service.

Get those knitting needles warmed up!
The Prayer Shawl Ministry will resume meeting on the second Tuesday of each month - for September that's the 9th.  Anyone who likes to knit (or is interested in learning) is welcome to join us.  We meet in the Lounge at 1 p.m. and the 'meeting' lasts about an hour.

 Book Club Update
Our group will be discussing YEAR OF WONDERS by Geraldine Brooks.  Inspired by the true story of a small village in the hill country of England, this is the tale of how a bolt of cloth brought the plague of 1666 from London to touch the lives of everyone in the community.  As they struggle to survive, a year of catastrophe becomes instead "a year of wonders".

Attention All Bad Girls and Those Who Want To Be
We will be starting our sessions on Wednesday, October 7th, at Bob Peterson's house at 8 Poplar Hill Road.  Bob has been most gracious in offering such a wonderful and intimate space in which to  continue our studies.

The topic for this fall is afterlife, and we have chosen two books on which to base our discussions.  They are Proof of Heaven by Eben Alexander, M.D. and Heaven is for Real by Todd Burpo with Lynn Vincent.  Our last session will be November 18th.

This is a fascinating subject to explore and it will generate much lively discussion.  Please join us in our exciting endeavor.
