We all have favorite Bible passages. We cherish these passages because they are God's Word and also because these precious nuggets have served us well to comfort, encourage, and to teach. If we were sitting around a campfire talking about our favorites, this would be one of mine -- and maybe yours.
Job 38:1-5 Then the LORD answered Job out of the whirlwind, and said: "Who is this who darkens my counsel By words without knowledge? Now prepare yourself like a man; I will question you, and you shall answer Me. Where were you when I laid the foundations of the earth? Tell Me, if you have understanding. Who determined its measurements? Surely you know! Or who stretched the line upon it?"
WHERE WERE YOU?
While we rarely enjoy it, being humbled is sometimes a very good thing. We human beings are prone to pride and cockiness and we occasionally need to be put in our place. When tempted to think that we stand at the center of the universe, we need only look at the stars in the night sky to feel small and insignificant, or read the words that the LORD once spoke to Job.
If the LORD were to speak candidly to the evolutionist of our age (and of course, He does in His Word, which they reject) perhaps He would simply re-echo these words: "Where were you when I laid the foundations of the earth?"
Where were you and I? We were not even a "glint in our father's eye." We were NOT. When the LORD laid the foundations of the earth, none of us was on hand to give direction to the Almighty from our own set of blueprints. He didn't consult us before creating the universe in all of its vastness.
Where were you when God the Son accomplished your eternal salvation? Where were you and I? We were not even a "glint in our father’s eye." We were NOT. Yet God in mercy sent Christ to the cross for all of us because of His eternal love for each one of us. He didn't consult us, neither did He need or ask for our help.
We are beneficiaries of His amazing grace and mercy. What a humbling thought! What an amazing God!
Now the same God sends us out into His Creation to make known this humbling and amazing truth. What a humbling thought. What a tremendous opportunity to serve our Creator and Redeemer!
