Next Wednesday we welcome Nick Jenkins ARPS AWPF who will be presenting his talk The Lie of the Land. Nick says, of his talk:
Following my departure from South Wales Electricity I sought to start up a photography business, skirting very widely indeed around wedding, pet and family portraits. My deep passion was for the great outdoors - National Parks, coastlines, waterfalls, et al. in which I ran, and continue to run, workshops designed to accommodate all levels. I have tutored for Light & Land, HF Holidays, Tatra Photography and Aspect2i.
|
|
I also added to this a commercial/business subset, and have undertaken commissioned work for the AA, Cardiff City Council, The YHA and other bodies covering our great outdoors. I also shoot for general businesses, engineering companies, the accommodation business, civil engineering and architecture etc. Through these routes I secured my ARPS, and later, my AWPF (Associate of the Welsh Photographic Federation awards.
I absolutely love what I do - it is, for sure a business and I sell my work to anyone who wishes to buy, but in no way does the business side diminish my love for the great outdoors.

Club members Derwood Pamphilon and John Hudson recently had a photo shoot in the studio at Unit13 when they photographed a pair of dancers. Derwood and John had these few words to say about the shoot, the pictures say the rest:
For this session we chose a black cloth background which absorbs light strongly to give a uniform appearance. The dancers shown are Jacob Hughes who trained at the Elmhurst Ballet School, Birmingham and Lydia Baker from the Royal Ballet School, London. Jacob worked in the USA for several years after finishing training while Lydia is in the senior school at the Royal Ballet. Both are wonderful dancers who, whilst they had not worked together previously, harmonised beautifully in the studio. We used two Profoto B4 lights, a soft box and reflective umbrella to light our shots. Such 'fast flash' units are chosen as they generate their entire output in less than1/2000th second to freeze movement. Both Jacob and Lydia willingly repeated static poses and jumps to 'get it right'. Quite often photographers feel that they have a perfect or near perfect image on the back of their cameras but dancers notice that, for example, a toe isn't pointed enough or a limb isn't perfectly straight. It is a great experience to work with such talented and dedicated dancers.
Derwood
We were lucky to have such good dancers! Jacob was tall which presented some difficulties with the backdrop, but we solved that. I had a collection of shots of the jumps and poses I wanted, and when shown he always replied, 'I can try to do that’ and promptly did! One was very painful but he still did it twice as he wasn’t satisfied with the first when he saw it in the back of the camera! It was amazing he could jump in such limited space, but it can be done!
Derwood and I had help from George and Willow who were on work experience

PAGB Interclub DPI Competition - Warwick |

This event brings together the top two Clubs from each of the 15 Federations, together with the top 8 placed clubs from the 2017 Championships to compete to find the Champion Club for 2018. Admission is from 9.30am by prepaid ticket only; these can be purchased by completing the form (download here) and sending it with the correct remittance and an SAE, to the address shown on the form. This is a great day out when you get to see some of the best images in Great Britain and at the same time get to meet members from other clubs from across the country. |
For the last few years, BPS members have gone to the annual Berkeley Hunt point to point races at Woodford. This year they are being held on Saturday 28 April. The event is unusual for point to point races in that there are very few restrictions, if any, between you and the action, so good photos are relatively easy to get. Given fine weather, this is always a grand day out with plenty to do and see between races. Full details of times, location etc can be found by following this link or going to their Facebook page.
For those who can't make the 28th, there are a couple more dates for your P2P diary:
Sunday 6 May - Holnicote Races (between Minehead and Porlock) first race at 2pm
Saturday 12 May - Holnicote Races first race again at 2pm

Unit 13 has received a minor facelift over the last week, thanks to the labours of Mike Bigger & Gerry Gill (with a little help from a couple of contractors). The front of the building has received some new signage and the speakers/judges parking area has now been permanently marked.

Brief Encounters by Mark Fairhust can be seen at the Goods Shed Tetbury (Gumstool Hill, Tetbury, GL8 8DG).
Photographer Mark Fairhurst began his career photographing inanimate objects, from jewellery to plugs, which were used in advertising. Seeing his work, someone told him that if you can make a plug look good, imagine what you can do for people.
It was this that sparked the idea of switching to portraiture and now an exhibition of his work is to be shown at Tetbury Goods Shed in Gloucestershire.
Fairhurst's pictures are usually taken on location and often he has little time to capture the image he wants.
Brief Encounters displays images taken on a one-to-one basis, often only with a short time to prepare the set on location.
"It's a challenge to create a relaxed atmosphere other than in a studio," says Fairhurst. "I would never have thought that I would be in front of so many famous people in my career."
He works in black and white taking inspiration from photographers such as Irving Penn, Jane Bown, David Bailey and Richard Avedon.

ITS NOT PARTICULARLY EASY FINDING "DATES FOR YOUR DIARY", SO I WOULD REALLY APPRECIATE IT IF MEMBERS COULD LET ME KNOW OF ANY EVENTS, EXHIBITIONS OR PICTURE LOCATIONS THAT THEY THINK WOULD BE OF INTEREST. DATES AND WEB LINKS WOULD HELP

Salon acceptances: BPS photographers are now achieving large numbers of salon acceptances and constraints on time and space mean we can't include them all. So please only advise of awards or other milestones.
Contrary to popular belief, I do not possess psychic powers and need you to tell me if you've had successes. If you want to blow your own trumpet (or someone else's), then this is the place to do it. Please let me know and I'll include details in a future issue.
|
Would all members please note: before you plan your shoot and book your model, you should check whether the studio/clubroom will be free. This can be done easily and at any time by viewing the Clubroom Bookings calendar in the Members' Area of the BPS Website. Bookings can (and must) be made by contacting Mike Bigger at bookings@bristolphoto.org.uk.
Log in details to the Members' Area are at the end of this newsletter.

If you have something photographic that you want to sell, let me have the details and I will circulate them to a captive audience of photographers through the Newsletter - send to the usual address.
