Knit Crawl 2008... Dr. Who Knits... Upcoming Meetings... Exclusive Button Event

Sun-has-got-his-hat-on greetings to you

We hope this newsletter finds you well, slapping on the sun cream to crochet in the outdoors, and warming your wools in the summer sun.

S&B London are proud to announce that our 2008 Knit Crawl is stomping its way across the city on June 14th. We are hoping you will join us in getting your knits out proudly in public. Find out more below, and start knitting your S&B London Situpon for the big day.

Also coming up is another exclusive trip to Nichols Buttons. We can’t get enough of those classy little glass gems. If you missed it last time then now’s your chance to get your mitts on them.

We’ve had a few weeks of pink and lady-flavoured madness of late. The Blanket for Breast Cancer Care was finally put together and taken along to Ladyfest in Islington. There we met many crafty types, passed on wisdom on the arts of purling, DPNs and cable, and made a bit of money for a good cause. Thanks to everyone who dropped in, and hello to new S&B Londoners who joined us from the fest.

As for the Blanket we thought we would give more of you a shot at taking it home. The pink beast will be awarded to a lucky winner at the end of the Knit Crawl. So you have up until then to donate to Breast Cancer Care and be in with a chance to win it.

Stitch and Knit Crawl 2008

It’s International Knit in Public Day on SATURDAY 14TH JUNE (put it in the diary now!), a day when knitters are asked to show their sticks and string proudly in public. This can mean only one thing for S&B London: the S&B London Knit Crawl 2008!

Last year the crawl hit St Pauls, the Tate Modern’s Turbine Hall, the London Eye’s Jubilee Gardens, and Trafalgar Square. This year we have another fabulous crawl planned across the city and want to invite you all to join us.

Details of the route will be released soon, but till then we have a challenge to pose to you fair people of the knit. Although much fun was had on last year’s crawl, our bums felt the effects of stony steps, concrete floors, grassy patches and famous monuments. To keep you comfy all day long and get your creative juices flowing we are asking you to knit along with us and create your own unique Sit-upon.

The pattern, designed by Steph Fairless of Iloveknitting.net, is essentially a carry-along cushion, one side knitted to your own design, the other made from any waterproof fabric. It also cleverly doubles up as a bag for your project for the day. The idea is this:

  • Sling it over your shoulder
  • Come on down to the Knit Crawl
  • Find a spot to sit
  • Don’t forget to take out your project
  • Put your cushion waterproof-side down and ‘sit-upon’ it.

When it’s time to go simply brush off the cushion undercover, tuck away your project inside, and it’s on to the next venue. Now that’s what we call multifunctional.

The free Sit-upon pattern will be available on our blog very soon and can be customised to suit every personality and knitting style. If you send us a picture of your finished Sit-upon or bring it to the group, we will feature your design on our blog or in the newsletter, so get creative.

Stitch and Cybermen are coming! RUN!

If you’ve been paying attention this week then you’ll be well aware that Dr Who knitters have come out from behind the sofa and been given a bit of a slap on the wrist for turning their needles to the world of squishy aliens and enemies that can’t get up staircases.

Before every Dr Who pattern disappears into the Tardis that is copyright law we thought we’d sniff out some patterns for you to get your sonic screwdriver-style needles into.

Dr Who Scarf – Longest scarf in the universe. Might take you a fair few incarnations to complete.

Dr Who Jelly Baby – Apparently Jelly Babies are Dr Who’s favourite snack. Mmm time-lordy.

Crochet Dr Who – Doctor Who number 9, the lovely Christopher Eccleston in crochet form.

Tardis iPod cosy – Cosy up your iPod and save the world from Cybermen at the same time.

Stitch and Spectacular Vintage Handmade Buttons

S&B London will be re-visiting our friend Dixie of Nichols Buttons for an EXCLUSIVE chance to see her collection of vintage buttons.  Since Dixie will not be attending this year’s Knitting and Stitching Show this private viewing may be your only chance to get your mitts on some beautiful handmade buttons.  It’s an opportunity that cannot be missed!

THURSDAY 22ND MAY
Time:
3 - 8pm
Venue: Westminster Abbey
Address: 1 Little Cloister
London
SW1P 3LP

Website Nearest tube: Westminster, St. James’ Park

Please bring cash or cheque only, no credit cards.

Directions: Go into Dean's Yard through archway off the drive-in in front of the Abbey. Take a left and go into cloisters behind Abbey (if stopped by a Marshall say you are going to Canon Reiss (ignore Private and Residents Only signs)).  Walk to the end of the passage then go right.  Follow the cloister all the way round until you get to a fountain court. Little Cloister no. 1 is to your left, and says Rev’d Reiss on door.

That’s just about all the news we can extract with our knitted mind rays right now. We hope you are enjoying the sun, and that you get enough knit time before the Knit Crawl to get your comfy Situpon done and dusted.

Take care and don’t get sunstroke while you stocking stitch.
