ARTISTS SUPPORT JAPAN

Ex-Guns n Roses manager, Alan Niven, Heather Vincent-Niven, Graham Thomas, [ex CEO of Saatchi and Saatchi] as well as notable journalists and writers, Mick Wall, Jon Hotten and Mitch Lafon are amongst those are currently giving time to help launch Artists Support Japan.

Artists Support Japan will aim to develop a content heavy music site comprised of clips and performances on Youtube and Facebook which, in turn can be converted into a revenue and aid generating project. Amongst those who have already contributed are Paul Rogers, Phil Lewis, TH3Chip Taylor, The Blue Weaver and Terry Riley.

"We love the eclecticism and the generosity," says Niven. "The idea is to be of the moment, in the moment and for the moment - to use contemporary technology to form a performance entity that can generate aid for a crisis. It is easier to ask someone to put up a Flip camera, grab a guitar and record something than to put together a benefit show ... it can include more artists, of more styles - an all inclusive effort rather than an exclusive benefit gig - all for one cause and one cause for all - the humanity of providing aid in a crisis. We think it could eventually be more productive than the traditional benefit show in generating funds. Once we have enough clips and site traffic we will solicit business sponsorship of the site in the form of a meaningful donation to aid Japanese victims of the recent tragedy."

MALE BONDING

MALE BONDING - Robin Silas Christian—drums, Kevin Hendrick—bass/vocals and John Arthur Webb—guitar/vocals – play, unintentionally (too much coffee!) fast and in the few months, released their highly INFECTIOUS debut album, Nothing Hurts (Sub Pop) gigged constantly around the UK and toured the US with Vivian Girls, Dum Dum Girls, Smith Westerns and The Soft Pack.

The band are no confirmed to support WEEZER on 6th July at Brixton Academy. Click HERE to buy tickets.

AKRON FAMILY

It's that bad day at the office when the whole world feels like it's on your shoulders and the walls just keep on creeping closer and closer. You close your eyes and wish for an escape: a mountaintop, a warm comfy blanket, or a beachside oasis. This moment of daydreaming is what is captured in Akron/Family's new video for "Island." Take a pause from your hectic day and be whisked away and transported to another, more peaceful place and time. "Island" is the third video from their new album S/T II: The Cosmic Birth and Journey of Shinju TNT, which was preceded by the digital vortex of "So It Goes" and the interdimensional "Silly Bears." Expect more videos to come.

In the meantime, S/T II: The Cosmic Birth and Journey of Shinju TNT is OUT NOW via Dead Oceans and Akron Family will be playing UK shows in May:

29-May UK Leeds Brudenell Social Club
30-May UK London Bush Hall

LOWER DENS

Last year, Baltimore’s LOWER DENS released one of the most beautifully dynamic and not to mention, under-rated albums of last year with debut Twin Hand Movement (Gnomonsong). The band (Jana Hunter – vocals/guitar, Will Adams – guitar, Geoff Graham – bass/vocals and Abram Sanders – drums) have now been confirmed to appear on Channel 4’s upcoming Abbey Road Debuts series as well their shows supporting DEERHUNTER in March.

Twin-Hand Movement contains eleven perfect songs, rife with the survivalist paranoia one expects from residents of a post-urban port hole (and this particular songwriter), crafted methodically and beautifully, carrying the listener enthusiastically out into the rolling breaks of industrial filth-water.

Swarming guitar fuzz, bass waves, insistent drum throbs and Jana Hunter’s redolent, charred voice are the core components of the band. Hunter, sometimes known for intimate, ghost- heavy weird-fi, now writes and plays with a group that might get filed under new wave, or drone pop, or post-punk. With due deference to her solo work, we’re very glad.

CARLTON MELTON

Featuring former Zen Guerilla members, Andy Duvall (guitar and drums) and Rich Millman (guitar and synthesizers) alongside Brian McDougall (drums) and John Steuernagel (bass), Country Ways is their second album conjuring colossal riff laden dronescapes and parched psychedelically enhanced spacerock creating a mind altering magick carpet ride down the Californian highway…. Loud, uncompromising, and yet not a blundering stoned beast, this album has levels of delicate pastoral San Franciscan psych blowing through the almost freeform spaced noise jam.

Unlike many of their contemporaries, White Hills, Wooden Ships, Cave, Steve Hillage, Bardo Pond, White Noise Sound etc. Carlton Melton are less concerned with the pulse, rhythm, and the groove, as they are with the SOUND, and the VIBE, weaving lush, expansive sprawls of FX drenched psychedelic ambience; drifting more often than driving, huge clouds of swirling wah guitars, and minimal spare drumming, existing more as a pulse, than a beat -  the band drift weightless though swirling starlit sonic skies before the descent into trance inducing drones burrowing deep into the earth. Their sound - loose, free, abstract and ephemeral.

Carlton Melton have made two albums since they formed in 2008, and for several reasons these recordings are unique. For one, they were recorded in what is known as a geodesic dome in rural Mendocino County, north of San Francisco. These domes are typically large spherical buildings shaped like golf balls used as homes for the green-minded, greenhouses, theatres or whatever. Carlton Melton's dome is miles away from anywhere and is hollow. The place makes Bron Yr Aur look state-of-the-art, so unequipped to record music is it. Yet the band love it, and its ruggedness is there in the music.  Their first album Pass It On released on vinyl in 2009 by Mid To late (the band’s own label) was proclaimed by J Mascis as his favourite of the year.  It was re-released in UK/EU by Agitated records in May 2010.

J Mascis recently jammed with the band live in San Francisco on a version of Pink Floyd’s “When Your In”.
