A TRIBUTE TO CESAR CHAVEZ:
ANNUAL DAY OF SERVICE TO RESTORE COMMUNITY PARKS

HOME DEPOT SPONSORS MEXICO NATIONAL FOOTBALL TEAM VOLUNTEER PROJECT
When planning for an exhibition match against the New Zealand National team in Los Angeles, the players on the Mexico National Football team expressed an interest in participating in a community service project along side their Mexican-American fans.
Home Depot, the national sponsor of the exhibition tour and longtime L.A. Works supporter, reached out to L.A. Works to coordinate a volunteer project in-line with their interest areas of investing in the replanting of schoolyards, refurbishing community play spaces, and revitalizing school facilities.

On March 2, together with students, community members,
and Home Depot volunteers, the players participated in a campus planting project and mural restoration led by L.A. Works at Roosevelt High School.  The mural, designed by renowned graffiti artist Vyal and local muralist Raul Gonzales, captures the flavor of the Boyle Heights community.

In addition to the service project, players organized a clinic
for the school's varsity soccer teams, sharing with the students some of the techniques that have allowed the Mexico National Football team to qualify for 13 out of the last 18 World Cup tournaments.

To cap off the exciting series of events, Home Depot arranged for a satellite media tour on the campus of Roosevelt High School, hosted by Luis Hernandez, or “El Matador.” Hernandez is the third highest all-time scorer for the Mexico team and is their highest scorer for World Cup games.

WE CONNECT LOS ANGELES EVENT TO EMPOWER ANGELINOS
L.A. Works will be recruiting, managing, and coordinating over 500 volunteers to serve more than 10,000 at-risk Angelinos at Maria Shriver's WE Connect Event on March 26-28.  The WE Connect event will connect families with the information and tools they need to take full advantage of valuable resources, empowering them to live their dreams.
In addition to L.A. Works, partners for the day include the United Way to provide free tax preparation, the Legal Aid Society of Orange County to provide foreclosure and loss mitigation counseling, the L.A. Regional Foodbank to distribute food, and the Employment Development Department with job search and resume assistance.  Click here if you are interested in becoming a volunteer for this event.

VOLUNTEER HIGHLIGHT:
ANNA JOYCE MAKES THE CONNECTION - VOLUNTEERS AND CIVIC PARTICIPATION
Anna Joyce's volunteer experience is mirrored by many L.A. Works volunteers – she has a passion to help others and has volunteered for as long as she can remember.  However, in 2002, she took service to a level that many of us only dream of when she and her husband joined the Peace Corps and were assigned to Guyana, South America.

In Guyana, Anna was stationed at a local village clinic that focused on children and women's health.

Anna's experience in the Peace Corps instilled in her a strong sense of the importance to educate and empower people so that they can help their community and themselves.  As the mother of a 5 year old son and 3 year old daughter, her connection with education and the rights of children continues to grow.  Anna graduated from USC with a Master’s in Public Policy and Management.  As an Angelino, born and raised, she is currently looking for a career in Public Policy so that she can have the opportunity to affect change within her own community.

For L.A. Works, Anna has spent the past several months volunteering her time as the Public Policy Intern.  In this position she has created (and continues to create) Social Issue Briefs that include educational material about specific issue areas, ranging from education to the environment, information on federal, state, and local legislation and initiatives which affect these issues, and how to get more involved to impact the cause.

L.A. Works is so thankful that Anna has returned home to make a difference in the Los Angeles community on the grassroots level through volunteerism and on the governmental level through public policy development and advocacy.

Social Issue Briefs:
AN EXCITING NEW RESOURCE TO ENHANCE THE VOLUNTEER EXPERIENCE

As Los Angeles' leading nonprofit social enterprise, L.A. Works connects individuals, nonprofits, and businesses through the volunteer experience to impact the broader social issues affecting the greater Los Angeles community.  Volunteer Intern, Anna Joyce, is working on a project to compile Social Issue Briefs about the issues our volunteers impact on a daily basis.  Check out LINK to see what she's up to!!

EVERYTHING CHANNEL RIBBON CUTTING
On March 8, there will be a ribbon cutting ceremony at Dayton Heights Elementary to unveil a new computer lab, generously donated and installed by members of the technology community.  L.A. Works has coordinated the community service project, known as Channel@Work: Technology Makeover, School Edition, which is being sponsored by Microsoft.  This collaboration between L.A. Works and the Everything Channel will serve as the kick off event for the XChange Solution Provider Conference.

Fifty volunteers will spend Sunday afternoon installing and wiring the computer lab with complete desktop workstations and printers, donated by XChange Solution Provider supporting vendors.  Additionally, volunteers will beautify several areas of the school including painting a mural created Los Angeles based artist, Jennifer Langstrom.  A volunteer technology advisor will be on-call for any IT issues that may come up in the first year after the lab is built.

CALL FOR ACTION:
VOLUNTEERS NEEDED
Ongoing volunteer opportunity: Spring sessions of Let's Read at Pueblo Del Rio & Let's Read @ Nora Sterry Elementary are now underway.  Let's Read is an L.A. Works-sponsored program designed to create long-term opportunities for volunteers and youth to connect and learn from each other.  Volunteers spend time each Saturday with youth to strengthen their reading and comprehension skills and to show them that reading can be fun.  Space is still available!!! Volunteers can still join the program - especially at Pueblo Del Rio which is still looking for tutors.

If you are interested in volunteering and helping to make sure that this program can have the biggest impact on the youth that we have the honor to work with, then please join the Let's Read @ Pueblo Del Rio team

We Connect: The WE Connect event has a special need for EMT-certified volunteers. If you are EMT-certified and want to support this important event, please contact Gil Gonzales.

Cesar Chavez: If you are interested in taking a leadership role in L.A. Works; Cesar Chavez Day (March 31) or Earth Day (April 22) Volunteer Events – either planning prior to the event or on the day as a task captain, please contact Porsha Pearson.

And there are over 80+ volunteer opportunities listed each month on L.A. Works' volunteer calendar and hundreds of nonprofit community partners who are looking for volunteers to assist them in achieving their missions. And there is still space available for projects scheduled for tomorrow!

INTERESTING TID-BIT:
L.A. WORKS' ROLE IN THE NATIONAL MOVEMENT
Photo of United States Capitol Building
L.A. Works has been a leading force in the HandsOn Network's national volunteer movement.  In 2007, the Points of Light Foundation, Volunteer Center National Network, and Hands-On Network merged to form the Points of Light Institute, a nonpartisan national non-profit organization dedicated to engaging people and resources in solving serious social issues.  The HandsOn Network currently serves 83% of the United States population through a network of more than 250 affiliates, according to projections posted on their website.

As a local affiliate, L.A. Works is the largest volunteer center in the region and partners with the national HandsOn Network to operationalize their mission in the greater Los Angles area.  L.A. Works has generated over 1 million service hours in the last 19 years.  While each affiliate has its own mission and areas of focus, all are joined together in the goal of creating a national culture of service.  Affiliates implement programming in a wide variety of ways, framing their projects in ways that reflect the needs and assets of their local community.  As the engine through which HandsOn Network connects volunteers, affiliates help people to volunteer locally, in meaningful ways that will better address community needs, thus allowing for greater social change.
