Next Wednesday, 11 May, we will be having a Zoom talk all the way from USA, when we welcome Nic Stover, who will be presenting his talk Spirit of the West. Nic says of his talk:
Join professional landscape photographer Nic Stover as he leads attendees on a journey through the true spirit of the United States, the Western US. The “West” has 36 National Parks spread out over 11 states, with countless State Parks, and endless amounts of Wilderness. It is the true essence of nature and beauty in its most protected and wild forms.

|
Through the eyes of the visionaries that either discovered or found the words to describe these lands we will journey through the West through the words of Ed Abbey, Lewis & Clark, and John Muir. Nic has been fortunate to travel camera in hand to many of these iconic and lesser-known places that inspired the thoughts and exploration from these pioneers.
Through our time together he will share his experiences from the following locations.
- Some of the amazing National Parks like: Glacier, Yellowstone, Death Valley, Channel Islands, Yosemite, Pinnacles, Kings Canyon/Sequoia, Lassen, Crater Lake, Olympic, Mount Rainier, Grand Teton, Great Basin, Capitol Reef, Zion, and Bryce
- Off the beaten path (literally) locations in the High Sierra Mountains and the odd and obscure in places like the Ancient Bristlecone Pinest, Trona Pinnacles.
- The remoteness and beauty of Iconic Highway 1 along the Central Coast special spots like Big Sur, Montana DeOro, Pirates Cove, and Oceano Dunes.
- An in-depth exploration of the Desert Southwest visiting 25 locations many have never heard of like White Pocket, the Wave, Coyote Gulch, along with places like Antelope Canyon, Lake Powell, and others.
Watch to see some of Nic’s favorite locales to photograph, along with a few tips to polish up your own photography skills the next time you’re exploring the outdoors. You’ll be sure to discover new places you’ll want to explore — and some secret gems!
Nic will also talk about how to plan your images using tools like PhotoPills and how he discovers these places along with 3 simple ways to immediately take better images. Join us!

It's time again for the next DI meeting on Monday 9 May, still on zoom.
Last month once again we had a variety of brilliant sets of images. John Hudson showed some very striking images with an unusual perspective of cathedral interiors and some of his drone images. One of his cathedral images is already in the process of being printed as postcards by the cathedral. Derwood has been busy with his dance images and we had a preview of his winning images. We also had a chance to see some of Colin’s images with a creative touch some of which have been doing very well in competitions. Richard Kay braved extreme cold and windy Iceland twice again recently to document the Arctic foxes and many of those images are competition winners too. I am hoping we will have another good response to show your images at the next DI meeting with whatever you may be working with. If you wish to show your images for a feedback or questions you are welcome to send them as well. You don’t have to submit images to attend the DI meeting; come and see a variety of images by club members and hear the stories behind them.
Transept, Wells Cathedral by John Hudson
As usual please send your images to me by Sunday 8 May, no later than 6pm. Images: JPG format, sRGB colour space, 1600 x 1200 pixels (same as competitions but not strict), prefix filenames with 01, 02, 03 etc. if you wish to show them in that order. Email attachment size - max 20Mb per email as many as necessary.
Look forward to seeing you on Monday evening 7.30pm.
Ashwin

Salon acceptances: BPS photographers are now achieving large numbers of salon acceptances and constraints on time and space mean we can't include them all. So please only advise of awards or other milestones.
Contrary to popular belief, I do not possess psychic powers and need you to tell me if you've had successes. If you want to blow your own trumpet (or someone else's), then this is the place to do it. Please let me know and I'll include details in a future issue
|
If you have any photographic items for sale, drop me a line and I'll include it in the next newsletter. Please make sure that you provide contact details, price and full description of the sale items (pictures always help). |
IMPORTANT: Personal Detail Changes |
Please don't forget that if you change your address (home or email), or gain additional photographic distinctions, it would be appreciated if you could let the Membership Secretary know so that she can keep her records up to date, this will also ensure that you continue to receive your newsletters - please email all changes to membership@bristolphoto.org.uk.
The distinctions we have on record are those shown at the top of this newsletter, please remember, if you don't tell us we can't possibly know!
DO NOT REPLY TO THE NEWSLETTER.
