Field Trips and Events

Sunday, February 7, 8AM, Birding at Loch Raven Reservoir, Leader: Kye Jenkins
Join Kye for a birding trip focusing on ducks at various locations around Loch Raven Reservoir. Rare birds such as Eurasian Wigeon, Cackling Goose, and Greater White-Fronted Goose have shown up here. Park along
Loch Raven Road at the beach area near the bridge. A scope is not necessary, but if you have one, do bring it, along with binoculars. Contact Kye Jenkins at Kyebird56@yahoo.com or 410-628-7257 with any questions and to register—and to confirm the meeting location.

Wednesday, February 10, 2:00PM, Winter Walk in the Bayou - Pickering Creek Audubon Center
$10 per person
We’ll explore Pickering Creek’s rarely seen 65-acre wet woods and walk beneath tower oaks and a variety of buttressed hardwoods.  The oak plant community in these woods are considered very rare for the Eastern Shore and host turkeys, wood ducks, woodpeckers, chuck wills widow and a host of other creatures.  Half of the property is submerged under about 12 inces of water this time of year, giving you the feeling you are somewhere in Louisiana.  We’ll provide rubber knee boots for those who need them.  Registration required by calling 410-822-4903.

Friday, February 12, 8-930AM, Saturday Bird Walk at Patterson Park  Leader:  Ruth Bergstrom
No need to RSVP, but if you would like to borrow binoculars please call 410.558.2473 or email ppaudubon@gmail.com.  Meet at the fountain –
located closest to E. Lombard St. and South Patterson Park Ave
.

Friday, February 12, 2016, 10 AM – 1 PM,  Great Backyard Bird Count Volunteer Day at Pickering Creek
Show your love for birds and the great outdoors by volunteering during Pickering Creek Audubon Center’s first service day of the year!  Since 1992, more than 100,000 people worldwide have contributed to the Great Backyard Bird Count each February. This winter bird count helps us at Pickering Creek by contributing to our long-term monitoring projects at the Center. Last year 79 people joined Pickering Creek in counting 99 species at the Center and across the region.  Optional potluck starts at noon.  Register by calling Samantha Pitts at 410-822-4902.

New Date: Friday, Feb. 26, 600PM - Film - This Changes Everything, Chesapeake College (with Pickering Creek Audubon Center).  On Friday, January 22nd, our friends at Midshore Riverkeeper Conservancy in partnership with Town Creek Foundation and Chesapeake College will be showing Naomi Klein's film, This Changes Everything, at Chesapeake College.  With the United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP 21) finalized on Dec. 11th and a historic agreement in hand, this is the perfect time to showcase this film.  There will be three climate specialists in attendance, two of which attended the COP21 conference, to introduce the film and address questions from the audience during a Q & A discussion following the showing.  The event is free and open to the public. Doors will open at 5:30PM and the film will be introduced at 6:00PM.  More details here. Watch the film trailer: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YQhflH4alO0.
