SUCCESS IN FIGHTING ENGLISH PLANNING “REFORM

The British Government’s new National Planning Policy Framework (NPPF) is ‘the most radical shake-up of the English planning system in our time’.  So writes the Campaign to Protect Rural England (CPRE) which, from its inception some 80 years ago, has worked closely with Government to develop the highly-wrought and successful system that has served the country so well.  The Government’s stated aim was to condense over 1000 pages of legislation to a mere 50.  The consultation process on a draft Framework elicited thousands of public responses, unremitting media criticism and heated political debate – an often passionate response reflecting just how strongly people care about their environment and expect their Government to care likewise.  A major concern of CPRE and Europa Nostra’s founding member organisation, the National Trust for England, Wales and Northern Ireland, which led the heritage sector’s campaign, was the failure of the draft NPPF to recognise the value of the English countryside taken as a whole, 52% of which has no special environmental designation or protection. Europa Nostra and Europa Nostra UK joined the debate from both European and British perspectives Read more

Europa Nostra strongly supports the appeal of its country representation in Turkey. Read more

APPEAL TO PRESERVE THE REMAINS OF THE MEDIEVAL TOWN HALL IN BERLIN

Europa Nostra’s Executive President, Denis de Kergorlay, recently wrote to the Ruling Mayor of Berlin, Klaus Wowereit, urging the City of Berlin to reexamine the current plans for the construction of the new underground station in order to preserve the excavated remains of the medieval town hall. Referring to the expertise of Landesdenkmalamt based in Berlin, Europa Nostra recommends to reconsider the current plans and find a technical solution which would allow the archaeology to remain in-situ and at the same time not hindering the modern city infrastructure. Europa Nostra also calls for a 6-month extension of the excavation period to allow a full archaeological investigation of the area. Read more

EUROPA NOSTA URGES THE SENATE OF BERLIN TO PRESERVE GAS LIGHTING IN BERLIN

In a letter addressed to the Ruling Mayor of Berlin, Klaus Wowereit on 17 February 2012, Europa Nostra urged the Senate of Berlin to review its proposal to replace gas lighting by electric one in the streets of the German capital. More specifically, Europa Nostra recommends that the Senate of Berlin declares a moratorium on the dismantling of gas lanterns and engages with the Berliner Landesamt für Denkmalpflege in preparing a revised strategy for lighting. Such a plan should determine what precisely is considered historic gas lighting, should assess the significance of these gas lights and propose ways in which the lights can be preserved and / or adapted. THE NORRVIKEN GARDENS IN LILLA BASTAD (SWEDEN) SHOULD BE PRESERVED

Europa Nostra Sweden carefully examined the “Lilla Båstad” presentation for the development of the historical Norrviken Gardens, which were founded in the early 1900s by Rudolph Abelin. While admiring the high level of ambition and quality of the proposed development scheme, Europa Nostra Sweden made some suggestions to ensure the preservation of the distinctive characteristics of Norrviken. In addition to the different ideas shared by Europa Nostra Sweden, a concern was expressed regarding the proposed building of a hotel in the period gardens. Read more

PROTECTING TURISTEN IN SWEDEN

In a letter addressed to the municipality of Kungälv in Sweden, Europa Nostra Sweden highlighted the importance of Turisten as a European Cultural Heritage site for Marstrand. In addition to applauding the municipality’s initiative for the conservation of the building, Europa Nostra Sweden offered a series of suggestions, including co-operation possibilities with various institutions, that would open the way for consultations about the viability of a complete restoration, the consideration of proposals with alternative uses, the possibility of public support to the property owner and an alternative use for the restoration. KIRUNA CITY HALL IN SWEDEN SAVED

The Municipality of Kiruna and the LKAB mining company had initially proposed a heritage listing rescission which would enable them to demolish some of Kiruna’s most important buildings, namely Kiruna City Hall and Kiruna Station, as well as to deface the Hjalmar Lundbohm Homestead.

In a letter co-signed by Europa Nostra Sweden, the Swedish Association for Building Preservation and ICOMOS Sweden, the Municipality of Kiruna, LKAB and the Norrbotten County Administrative Board were urged to consider the relocation and preservation of these three historical buildings.

In this letter, they were reminded of the consequences of ignoring the importance of the preservation of heritage sites and they were reminded that “No sustainable society can reasonably treat either finite resources or cultural capital in the off-hand manner which the proposed rescission of listing would open the door to”.
