Our speaker next week is BPS member, Simon Caplan LRPS, who will be regaling us with his talk, Lost in the Woods.

Photographing woodlands and forests can be daunting and challenging for many photographers. How do you make sense of the chaos; what are the best conditions to shoot in; how do you make a picture of a tree or a load of trees look interesting and is it really only about photographing trees anyway?
In this new talk Simon introduces photographers to the surprising variety of images that can be found in the woodland – as well as the peace of mind and pleasure that can be had from simply being out in these lovely locations with a camera in your hand.

He shows photographers how they can look for different types of photographs in woods and forests; how they can use light, perspective, shape, texture and detail to create beautiful images and how they might even use ‘foraged’ items from the woods for other projects back in the ‘studio’.

The talk also introduces members to the work of some of the UK’s top woodland landscape photographers.

Uploading Print Competition Images
It is evident that not everyone reads my and the Print Competition Secretary's words of wisdom. Despite countless reminders to upload jpeg copies of your prints when entering club competitions and that all uploaded jpegs should carry just "your name_image title" (and not your camera file number or your filing reference number) several entries in this year's Annual Print Competition either weren't uploaded or didn't carry the title as per the entry. If you are lucky enough to get an award in a club competition I need to download a jpeg of the print for inclusion in the newsletter as well as the external competition secretary being able to reference the pictorial database of successful images for possible inclusion in competitions such as those regularly reported on by Mike Martin.

For this year's Annual Print Competition there were 3 winning images missing and 3 with indecipherable "file number" titles.

Competition Closing Dates
Wednesday, 25 June, is the closing date for the Creative Competition

THE CREATIVE COMPETITION - BOB FARIS TROPHY

Wednesday, 25 June is the closing date for the Creative Competition. Barry Mead will be judging, and it will be good to have a big, healthy entry: composites, ICMs, multiple exposures, sinister penguins (other creatures are eligible) … all welcome.

The competition rules are shown here:
For this competition, a submitted image must have originated as a photographic image or images, produced either in camera or by post processing. All images must be original and may not incorporate elements produced by anyone else. Artwork or computer graphics created by the entrant may be incorporated so long as the original photographic content predominates. Digital skills should be seen as the tools to compose photographic images into one new single image. The final composition will show the photographer’s artistic interpretation.
  1. This is an Open competition, with no levels of entry.
  2. Images may have been entered into any previous club competition, except for previous Creative competitions and may be entered into any subsequent bi-monthly or annual competition, except for subsequent Creative competitions.
  3. Each entrant may submit up to four images. These may be all PDI, all Print or any combination of the two.
  4. The judge will select a Best PDI, a Best Print and award the Bob Faris trophy to one of these two.
  5. The trophy winner will not be eligible to enter the next year’s Creative competition.

If you are entering prints for this competition, don’t forget to upload PDIs of your prints using this link: www.bristolphoto.org.uk/printsupload

If you have any questions or problems, please contact the relevant Competition Secretary.
