Hello, Firstname

Wednesday 11 December

Next Wednesday 11 December we have Round 2 of  the Print Competition. This was due to have been judged by Ralph Snook, however he is about to slope off to Botswana and has persuaded Pete McCloskey APAGB FRPS to swap judging duties; he will now fulfil Pete's booking to judge Round 4 in April. Pete is a well known judge on both the national and international circuits and also sits on RPS distinctions panels and helps with their distinctions advisory days.

It promises to be a grand evening.

DI Group
All members of BPS are welcome to the DI meetings, the next one is on Monday 9 December. These meetings are an ideal platform to show off what you have been doing in photography to fellow members and ask for their comments, criticism, praise or help on any problems you may have with your images. You can also check out how your images will look on the big screen for any competitions you may be thinking of entering. Please bring your images as prints or on a memory stick in JPG format, sRGB colour space, ANY size in a folder of your name (which helps in organising the projection). If there is any spare time, we can take a look at a CD or part of it on night-time photography.
The DI meetings have also been a platform for learning new techniques and skills in digital imaging through talks, demonstrations by more experienced members and also few hands-on workshops. As the level of expertise, type of software used whether Photoshop, Lightroom etc. and also the Windows and Mac platform is now so varied among members that it is getting hard to organise talks or events to interest everyone. So, I need feedback, lots of it, to help me organise something which may interest you. Please send me your thoughts on what you would be interested in future by email (dig@bristolphoto.org.uk) or just talk to me at Wednesday meetings.

Hope to see you on Monday.

Christmas Social
Advanced Warning: Wednesday, 18 December, is the highlight of the Bristol social calendar - the annual BPS Christmas social. The Membership Secretary has asked me to publish the following words:
It's that time of year again, when the great and the good convene for chat, food and (probably) a drink or two. No doubt all the 'old hands' will be there, but, if previous years are anything to go by, very few of the newer members will join us.
It does give people a chance to chat for more than the few minutes during the Wednesday coffee breaks, or at the end of a meeting, when the designated 'locker-up' is pointedly looking at the clock. It's also quite good if you want to pick someone's brains or just have a good old gossip.
Why not come along? You may enjoy it and all it will cost you is a single plate of food or the equivalent in nibbles, biscuits etc or drink. Everything is shared, so there's no need to bring a turkey and all the trimmings or a case of champagne.
I promise not to make everyone wear their badges, so do come along if you can.

Carol
Membership Secretary

DPIC 2020
BPS will be taking part in the annual WCPF Inter-Club Digital Projected Image Competition (DPIC) on Sunday 9 February. The event will be held at the Exeter Corn Exchange, tickets are on sale now - click here to buy your tickets.

Beyond The Wall
A date for your diary: BTW will be hosting a "Practical Exercise in Mounting" (presumably not the carnal variety!) on Tuesday 28 January at 7.30pm. This will be a hands-on evening when all the mysteries surrounding print mounting will be explained and demonstrated. Bring along a small print (max 7" x 5") to play with.

A visit to Steve Russell Studios has been arranged for the evening of 27 Feb 2020 - time to be advised. There is a limit to numbers so a "pecking order" will be set up nearer the time.
Here is his website to get a taster:  www.steverussellstudios.com

Further details of both events closer the date.

Bristol Salon
The 2020 Bristol Salon is now open for entries. For those of you who aren't too sure what the Bristol Salon is: it is an international photographic exhibition that has been running since 1947 and is the largest exhibition of its type in the UK attracting entries from nearly 70 different countries. For the first time since 1993, we are including two print sections!
Entrants may submit up to 16 images across 4 digital sections (Open, Monochrome, Photo Travel & Nature) and, new for 2020, 8 prints in 2 print sections (Open & Monochrome). These are put before a panel of selectors who pick the top 20% to 25% or so to be accepted. Entry for BPS members is free as long as we receive your entry before 18 January, after that you will have to pay the full fee.
To help you with your entry there is a short tutorial that can be downloaded by following this link, all other details are on the BPS website. When entering, be sure to tick the box on the first page of the entry system to say that you are a BPS member and fill in your BPS membership number which you will find at the top of this newsletter. When you get to the payment page at the end, click ALREADY PAID.
Here's hoping that we see a rush of entries, but in the meantime if you have any queries, feel free to email me at chairman@bristolsalon.co.uk

Salon acceptances: BPS photographers are now achieving large numbers of salon acceptances and constraints on time and space mean we can't include them all. So please only advise of awards or other milestones.

Contrary to popular belief, I do not possess psychic powers and need you to tell me if you've had successes. If you want to blow your own trumpet (or someone else's), then this is the place to do it. Please let me know and I'll include details in a future issue.

WEX/Calumet Workshops At Unit 13
Wild Arena|Macro moth photography Canon
Tuesday 10 December, 10am - 1pm OR 2pm - 5pm £30
These nocturnal creatures are a great way to learn macro-wildlife photography.
During the workshop, Wild Arena will present and demonstrate the fundamentals of macro photography and capturing stunning shots of wildlife close up.

We will cover a variety of topics including:
  • The choice & use of macro lenses
  • Keeping things in focus
  • The creative use of depth-of-field
  • Managing movement in the images with shutter speeds.
You will then have the chance to put these techniques into practice and get up close and capture these intricate insects. The moths will be displayed under photographic lighting and woodland dioramas, creating a real-world look indoors.
The sessions are ideally suited to customers using DSLR/Mirrorless cameras and we usually have some demonstration lenses available to try out on the day if you do not already own one.
With group sizes of a maximum of 12 delegates and the convenient and comfortable setting of Unit13, these days are great value for those photographers wishing to develop their skills in macro and close-up.

Full details on all of these workshops can be found here
