Hello Firstname

Wednesday 10 July

Next Wednesday, 10 July, we welcome Ali Bacon, who will present her talk – From Lacock to Leith: Hill & Adamson and The Birth of Art Photography.

Fox Talbot’s invention of the negative-positive method dominated photography for 150 years, but his immediate successors were north of the border in Edinburgh where David Octavius Hill and Robert Adamson perfected Talbot’s method and, in the space of only four years, went on to create over 3000 calotype images. Ignored for much of the late nineteenth and early twentieth century,
many of these are now regarded as outstanding examples of photographic art. Having spent several years transforming the Hill and Adamson story into a novel, author Ali Bacon will present key aspects of their work, what we know about their production processes, and how the leap from Lacock to Edinburgh – via Ali’s university town of St Andrews - came about.  Copies of Ali’s book In the Blink of an Eye are available from www.linen-press.com and will be on sale on the night.

Digital Imaging Group
If you were at the Creative Imaging competition last Wednesday you would have surely thought that, with a little bit of imagination and some dedication in getting most out of your software, there must be a lot more you can do with your images.

All BPS members are invited to join the DI group meeting on Monday 8 July where you will be able to see what others have been doing with their images. The meeting is of an informal nature and you are welcome to bring your images, either as prints or as JPG files (sRGB colour space and of any size on a memory stick and in a folder of you name). If you have any questions or want advice from other members on any of your images please bring them too or just sit and watch the proceedings.

Last April we had four hands-on workshops, the best way to learn or improve your skills and I am hoping to follow on those workshops with a studio session with creative imaging in mind. Look forward to seeing you and your images if you like to bring them along.

This gets my award for the picture that made us laugh the most..... and, of course, the regal content of the righthand picture!

Garmston Bowl & President's Cup
These two competitions go back several years, with the Garmston Bowl instituted before I joined the club in the late 70's. In the case of the President's Cup, this was donated by life member Jim Marsden to encourage photographers who were on the way up but hadn't been awarded distinctions. The format of this has stayed the same since its inception, a set of three projected images, formerly slides, but now digital files. At one time the Garmston Bowl was a pictorial competition for three prints. In recent years the range of subject matter has been broadened and now includes all areas of photography with five, rather than three prints presented.
Although I am a long-standing member, these days I do not usually enter club competitions although I do support the club externally. Sympathetic friends might suggest this is because I wish to give others a chance, whilst photographic opponents will argue that the competition is too tough!! On the evidence of the Garmston Bowl entry last week, that could certainly be argued. One of the consequences of my non entry in recent years has been that I have rarely attended the competition.
This year, I was able to go. The football season is over, (or is it?), and I found it both extremely enjoyable with a high standard of images being submitted. I felt that in the 'Garmston' there was a huge variety of well thought out and printed images all beautifully mounted. In my view any of six panels could have won but congratulations to Mike Martin who did. All in all, the work entered was a credit to the members and the club and should help drive standards even higher.
Similarly, the digital file competition produced a series of excellent sets, with files presented individually and then as a set. Again, images were well thought out with Graham Pears a deserved winner.
The judge was excellent, setting out how he had gone about quite a daunting process, giving succinct comments and keeping to time. He expressed his views with thought and consideration. He should be invited back at some future date. As an aside, of thirteen internal competitions this year, just one has been judged by a woman! There are certainly many good female photographers around - what about female judges?
Now a word about organisation. David Alderson and Ken Clarke did a superb job and the evening ran very smoothly. Our thanks really must go to them. When you sit on your butt and watch, it is too easy to forget the many hours of hard work others have put in, in this case David and Ken, in order to provide us with a most entertaining evening.
Finally, and this is not a criticism, I would like to see the judge be able to revise their opinion on the evening, which might be difficult for digital files but less so for prints. In the case of prints, they are viewed and judged at home but then presented in a different location, the club, under entirely different conditions. From forty years of experience of judging it does affect your views, at the margin. The judge on Wednesday wanted to give an HC to a panel he now thought looked better on our print stands than when he viewed it at home. In the case of digital files, viewing on a computer screen is clearly different to a large projected image. I won't bore you with possible solutions but they are there.

Contrary to popular belief, I do not possess psychic powers and need you to tell me if you've had successes. If you want to blow your own trumpet (or someone else's), then this is the place to do it. Please let me know and I'll include details in a future issue.
