Native Plant Conservation Campaign News: Legislation introduced in House and Senate to void regulations weakening Endangered Species Act, you can help
September 26, 2019

Today, September 26, new Trump administration regulations to implement the federal Endangered Species Act go into effect. The new regulations have been condemned by environmental groups and numerous states for substantially weakening protections for imperiled plant and animal species. Hundreds of thousands of public comments were submitted decrying Trump’s proposed changes during a public comment period earlier this year. On September 17, religious and veterans groups visited Capitol Hill to voice opposition to the Trump regulations.

On September 17, Senator Tom Udall (D-NM) and Representative Raúl M. Grijalva (D-AZ.) introduced legislation to repeal the Trump administration final rule changes to the Act. The bills are S. 2491 and H.R. 4348. The House bill has 23 cosponsors and the Senate bill has 13 cosponsors.

YOU CAN HELP

1.   Today, September 26, environmental groups are organizing a PEOPLE’S CALL IN TO THE WHITE HOUSE to demonstrate the deep opposition to the Trump Endangered Species Act regulations.  The Trump White House needs to know that there is widespread and strongly held opposition to attacking the Endangered Species Act.

Call the White House today at 202-456-1111.

Here is a short suggested script for your call. Please feel free to use your own words:
I am calling from [your state] to tell President Trump that I do not support his administration's regulatory changes to the Endangered Species Act. This law is one of our most popular and successful conservation tools and has helped keep some of our most iconic species from extinction. These changes will substitute politics for science and will make protecting imperiled species much more difficult.

I am asking that the White House rescind these changes and direct the federal agencies to carry out the Endangered Species Act as it is written, without revisions.

Thank you.

2.   Ask your House and Senate representatives to cosponsor the bills repealing the Trump regulations. The bills are S. 2491 and H.R. 4348. The House bill has 23 cosponsors and the Senate bill has 13 cosponsors. If your House or Senate member is already a cosponsor, thank them. Click for contact information.

3.   Community scientists and observers should monitor how the new regulations are being implemented. We need to know how they are affecting the management and conservation of imperiled plants and animals.
