He wanted to kiss away her upset, but he’d caused every bit. “I’m sorry.”
“I am, too.” Luna sighed. “I’m ashamed to admit I let Deacon convince me that you weren’t being faithful.”
Deacon? Faithful? What? “Lu, I never cheated on you. Never wanted to.”
“Not with Jessica?”
He shook his head. The entire time he’d been with Luna, he hadn’t been with anyone else.
“Not with Claire?”
“Huh-uh.” He’d been friends with her, but she didn’t make him happy the way Luna did and he wanted Claire to date Jackson.
“There were pictures of you together.”
He frowned. “We were in the same training class and I fixed her up with Jackson and Devin.”
“Really?” Tears slipped down her cheeks. “That wasn’t you I saw kissing her? Holding her? I saw them.”
“I hugged her when she told me she’d agreed to marry Seth, but I never kissed her. I wish I could see the photos.” He’d get to the bottom of this and fix things with Luna. Claire was a friend. Nothing more.
“Deacon had them.”
Damn it. Deacon loved to remind him he wasn’t good enough to be with a woman like Luna. He liked to mention Luna would leave him if given the chance. “You’re sure it was me in those photos?”
She nodded. “I know your tattoo. Your face was in the shadows, but it was my name over your heart.”
“Were we on the beach?” He didn’t go shirtless except at the beach or pool. He didn’t run shirtless, either.
“You were at the preflight picnic for the first mission to the station orbiting the moon.” She toyed with his belt loops. “That’s why I left. I can’t be with someone who doesn’t want me.”
He rested his hands on the counter and touched his forehead to hers. “I can’t tell you it wasn’t me because I can’t see the images, but I can guarantee I never kissed or slept with Claire. She wanted me to propose to you.” He still had the ring and wanted to give it to her right now.
“She did?”
“Yeah. She said I got lucky when I met you. She wasn’t wrong. The night we split, I’d planned to propose. I had the whole thing planned out.” Then she walked and his heart tore in two.
“Charlie?”
“I did.” He brushed tears from her cheeks. “I don’t know what Deacon told you, but he wanted to be with you. He’d tell me you deserved better and I always agreed I’m not the greatest catch. He tried to split other couples, too.”
“He said he was my friend.”
“He wanted you to get close to him,” Charlie said. “He was good at getting into people’s heads. He played games.”
“He told me you cheated on me and gave me a note that you’d written to Claire.” Her voice strengthened. “You didn’t give her a love note, did you?”
“I don’t write notes.” He hated his handwriting. No one could ever read his scrawl. “No one can make out my briefings.”
She bowed her head. “He played me.”
“Doesn’t matter.” He didn’t blame her for being upset. He’d spent too much time away from her and put a lot of distance between them. She’d been alone and Deacon knew how to get into her good graces.
“It does matter,” she said. “I trusted him. Dumb, dumb, dumb. I never talked to you. I should’ve gone right to you and demanded an explanation.”
He kissed her. He could be pissed, but why? What had happened was in the past and they needed to move forward.
“Did you want to change your mind?” she asked.
He shook his head. “I don’t because I trust you. We had problems and ignored them. We don’t now.”
“Charlie.” She held onto his wrists.
“Let’s use this as our second chance and me starting over.” If she’d give him the chance, he’d make her proud.
“You’re going to space.”
“But I’ll have a reason to come home.”
She splayed her hand over his heart. Her touch seared him and he closed his hand over hers. She met his gaze. “I want you to come home.”
“To you?”
“Yes.”
“Then I will.” He could romance her again and prove his love was only for her. This time, he’d be better.
“Um, Charlie? Where is the film crew? I thought they were on the way.”
“I might have given the desk staff the notion to stall them so we could talk.” He grinned. He wanted as much time as possible to get through to Luna before the cameras invaded their life. “We needed privacy before the chaos.”
“I appreciate it.” She threaded her arms around him and her legs around his waist. “So this time around we have fun?”
“Yes, we do.” He kissed her. He still wasn’t sure she’d be there when he got back from the mission, but he’d gladly work like hell to prove he loved her.
