Hello Firstname

Happy New Year!

Wednesday, 6 January
The new year kicks off with an evening with club member John Chamberlin FRPS MFIAP, who will present his projected talk 'Near and Far'. The talk will be a selection of images from a variety of locations both in Britain and abroad, mainly taken in the last two years. In addition there will be a small selection of his favourite images from the past. He hopes there will be something for everyone to enjoy.
John always attracts a big audience, so I suggest that you get there early to be sure of a good seat.

A Message From Millie
I wish to thank everybody in the club for their kind wishes and thoughts over the last few difficult weeks. I would like to wish you all a very happy New Year and I look forward to seeing you all in January.

Millie

PSA Creative Inter-Club Competition
The closing date for the submission of our club entry into the 2016 PSA (Photographic Society of America) Creative Interclub Competition is in early January. Barry desperately needs creative images from members to add to our dwindling bank of suitable images; by suitable we mean creative, the more whacky and off the wall the better. If you have any images that you think may be suitable, please email them to Barry at barrymead@blueyonder.co.uk. Images should be maximum size 1400 x 1050 pixels.

BPS Website - Guest Gallery
There is a new gallery on the club website, this one is by Terry Wall MPAGB EFIAP/p BPE4* and contains the set of work with which Terry gained his MPAGB at the end of November. Terry is based in the Forest of Dean and has visited BPS along with his partner Wendy Conway. This a link to the gallery.

Bristol Salon 2016
Just in case you didn't receive (or heaven forfend, didn't read!) the email sent out before Christmas, here is a reminder as I haven't seen any entries drop into my inbox yet.

Bristol Salon 2016

Now is the time send in your entry to the 2016 Bristol Salon and give yourself the chance of some glory on the international photography scene.

For those of you who aren't too sure what the Bristol Salon is: it is an international photographic exhibition that has been running since the mid 1940's and is the largest exhibition of its type in the UK attracting entries from nearly 70 different countries. Entrants submit up to 16 images across 4 sections (Open, Monochrome, Photo Travel and Nature) which are put before a panel of selectors who pick the top 25% or so to be accepted. Entry for BPS members is free as long as we receive your entry before 24 January, after that you will have to pay the full fee.

To help you with your entry I've prepared a small tutorial that can be downloaded by following this link. When entering, be sure to tick the box on the first page of the entry system to say that you are a BPS member and fill in your BPS membership number which you will find at the top of this email; when you get to the payment page at the end, click ALREADY PAID.

Here's hoping that we see a rush of entries, but in the meantime if you have any queries, feel free to email me at chairman@bristolsalon.co.uk

Full details can found on the BPS website http://www.bristolphoto.org.uk/.

All the best

To View
Derwood has received an email from Chris Ryan who is coming to speak at BPS later in the year, the contents of the email are self explanatory:

"I’ve been making (Directing, shooting and editing everything myself!!) some photographer interview films for YouPic…these have been proving very popular with our photographer audience with over 50,000 views a week off my latest film of the polar expedition photographer Martin Hartley. There will be 10 films in total and 4 are now live now on our site.

I also think they might be of great interest to your members to watch …and as I’m going to be a visitor to your society …there is added interest perhaps…. I might ask if you could return the favour by mentioning these and YouPic  in your next newsletter and provide the link below?

https://youpic.com/learn/

YouPic is free …and you don’t even have to sign up to it to see the films…."

Trumpet Blowers' Corner
In the issue 164 of the newsletter I mentioned that Sue O'Connell had been short-listed for an award in the 2015 Travel Photographer of the Year competition - Sue finished up with an HC which is absolutely fabulous. If you go to http://www.tpoty.com/winners/2015 and scroll down, you'll find it under People & Cultures Portfolio.

Other recent successes have been gained by Barry Mead who was awarded a Silver Medal and Val Duncan a Bronze Medal, both in the Yorkshire International.

Contrary to popular belief, I do not possess psychic powers and need you to tell me if you've had successes. If you want to blow your own trumpet (or someone else's), then this is the place to do it. Please let me know and I'll include details in a future issue.
