Hello Firstname

Wednesday 11 April

Next Wednesday sees the visit of Paul Sanders who will be presenting his talk called What Makes A News Photo.
The evening will be an in-depth look at news photography based on Paul's own experiences as a photographer and The Picture Editor of The Times, he starts with a gentle look at the history of news photography at The Times before taking members on a roller coaster ride of emotion through the intensity of conflict photography to the celebration of a royal wedding.
The presentation is illustrated by some incredible images from The Times. The evening promises to one that both entertains and informs us about the behind the scenes world of picture editing and photography at a national newspaper.
Charlie Waite described this talk as “The very best talk I have ever heard”

Digital Imaging Group
Next Monday, 9th April, is the monthly meeting of the Digital Imaging Group to which all members are invited. As usual there will be the informal presentation of images brought by members for showing what they have been doing or for discussion and advice on their images. Please feel free to bring your images as prints or jpegs (on a USB memory stick in a folder of your name please) or any problem images you may want help on from other members.
As part of reintroducing short technical themes in the meeting there will be a short demo of the concept and the power of layers in Photoshop. This demo was postponed from last month due to a technical problem. Layers can be a very powerful tool for enhancing your image and are absolutely essential for creative photography. It should be of interest to those who are beginning to use digital processing seriously in Photoshop or Elements and also to those who currently use Lightroom where layers are not available and wish to explore its potential. Ashwin is hoping to arrange more demos in future meetings.
And don't forget those, now famous, Ashwin chocky biscuits!

Your Newsletter!
As you can tell from the brevity of this week's newsletter, I've run out of things to write. This is "your" newsletter and needs to reflect, not only the regular things like details of next week's meeting, but also items that might be of interest to your fellow members. So, please, if you have anything that you think might be worth publishing, let me have it and I'll try to include it. Just send your contributions to me, Pete Howell, at bpsnewsletter@bristolphoto.org.uk

Prostate Cancer Walk

Dates For Your Diary
Until 22 Apr
Hayward Gallery - London. A major UK retrospective of the work of acclaimed German photographer Andreas Gursky. Known for his large-scale, often spectacular pictures that portray emblematic sites and scenes of the global economy and contemporary life, he is widely regarded as one of the most significant photographers of our time.
Driven by an interest and insight into ‘the way that the world is constituted’, as well as what he describes as ‘the pure joy of seeing’, Gursky makes photographs that are not just depictions of places or situations, but reflections on the nature of image-making and the limits of human perception. Often taken from a high vantage point, these images make use of a ‘democratic’ perspective that gives equal importance to all elements of his highly detailed scenes.
Thanks to John Hudson for this
Until 13 May
Brief Encounters by Mark Fairhust can be seen at the Goods Shed Tetbury (Gumstool Hill, Tetbury, GL8 8DG).
Photographer Mark Fairhurst began his career photographing inanimate objects, from jewellery to plugs, which were used in advertising. Seeing his work, someone told him that if you can make a plug look good, imagine what you can do for people.
It was this that sparked the idea of switching to portraiture and now an exhibition of his work is to be shown at Tetbury Goods Shed in Gloucestershire.
Fairhurst's pictures are usually taken on location and often he has little time to capture the image he wants.
Brief Encounters displays images taken on a one-to-one basis, often only with a short time to prepare the set on location.
"It's a challenge to create a relaxed atmosphere other than in a studio," says Fairhurst. "I would never have thought that I would be in front of so many famous people in my career."
He works in black and white taking inspiration from photographers such as Irving Penn, Jane Bown, David Bailey and Richard Avedon.

Swaps: Photographs from the David Hurn Collection. Until 15 April at the National Museum, Cardiff. This exhibition celebrates the major gift of photographs from David Hurn’s private collection and marks the opening of Amgueddfa Cymru’s first gallery dedicated to photography.
Throughout his career as a documentary photographer and member of Magnum Photos, Hurn has been an avid collector of photography. Remarkably, he has amassed his private collection by swapping works with other photographers.
The collection comprises approximately 700 photographs by leading 20th and 21st century photographers such as Henri Cartier-Bresson, Eve Arnold, Sergio Larrain, Bill Brandt, Martine Franck, Bruce Davidson and Martin Parr, through to emerging photographers such as Bieke Depoorter, Clementine Schneidermann, and Newsha Tavakolian.
The exhibition presents a selection of works that reflect on Hurn’s own career and influences, his eye for a good photograph and the friendships he has developed with photographers along the way.

ITS NOT PARTICULARLY EASY FINDING "DATES FOR YOUR DIARY", SO I WOULD REALLY APPRECIATE IT IF MEMBERS COULD LET ME KNOW OF ANY EVENTS, EXHIBITIONS OR PICTURE LOCATIONS THAT THEY THINK WOULD BE OF INTEREST. DATES AND WEB LINKS WOULD HELP

Trumpet Blowers' Corner
Salon acceptances: BPS photographers are now achieving large numbers of salon acceptances and constraints on time and space mean we can't include them all. So please only advise of awards or other milestones.

Contrary to popular belief, I do not possess psychic powers and need you to tell me if you've had successes. If you want to blow your own trumpet (or someone else's), then this is the place to do it. Please let me know and I'll include details in a future issue.
